Most in new poll say Biden running mate won't influence their vote

A majority of U.S. voters said presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s choice of running mate will have no impact on their vote in November, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.

Fifty-four percent of respondents said the selection will not affect their vote, compared to 20 percent who said it will have a minor impact and 16 percent who said it would have a major impact.

Democratic strategist Joel Payne, however, said: “I don’t see anyone going into a voting booth thinking about a VP candidate” and said the polling indicated Biden should focus on a selection that does not hurt his standing in the polls. Running mates “can be a threat that can hurt the ticket — look at John McCain and Sarah Palin in 2008,” he added.

Pollsters surveyed 1,992 registered voters from July 10-12. The poll has a 2-point margin of error, with higher margins for the subsamples.

This is why I think that Tucker Carlson has gotten into a battle with Sen. Duckworth, he wants to raise her profile so that Joe Biden will pick her and depress African-American vote turnout this fall.

I've heard that sentiment expressed elsewhere on this board too.

Representing Asian-Americans (and disabled Americans) would be an admirable trait. Not saying people don't agree with that, and I'm not directing this at you per se, but I'm just surprised to see a number of people balk at Tammy Duckworth simply because she's not black. One poster a few weeks ago said a Duckworth selection would be a slap in the face to African-American women. With only two people on a ticket, not every possible demographic can be represented, especially if Biden's number one priority is who he thinks can best be president in his stead.

is my personal experience.

Before I moved to SC a couple of years ago, I live in NY, about a half hour away from NYC. We voted in a community center, in the gymnasium, which was set up with tables for signing voting books, getting ballots, and stations to fill them out before turning them in.

This community center served a goodly number of precincts from the area. At ours, which was predominantly white, there were never more than two or three people ahead of you in line. But it was startling to see the differences over the years with other precincts where most voters were African-American. Big long lines to vote in 2008 and 2012, but no lines at all in 2010, 2014, and 2016.

African-American voters saved Joe Biden's campaign. He performed most dismally in Iowa and New Hampshire, and really didn't get life breathed into his campaign until the South Carolina primary. Continued voting in Southern states where African-American voters made up a majority (or at least a very sizable minority) of Democratic voters is what finally propelled Joe Biden over the top.

He owes them something for that.

Even if the VP pick doesn't matter *much*, it can at least help move the needle, and perhaps even tip the state. African-American turnout will be crucial in North Carolina and Georgia.

rely on the polls right now, and the news media always likes to make things appear tighter than they are as we approach Election Day.

We need not just African-Americans to show up to vote, we need them to encourage their friends and families to do the same. It seems that it takes having an African-American on the ballot would help insure that.

One of Hillary's biggest mistakes four years ago was picking the most boring white man in Virginia.

selecting a person of color for his ticket will mean he'll go down in history as someone who undoubtedly opened up doors for racial minorities. It may be a long time before anyone else has the distinction of having served with two people of color in the White House.

Such a selection may also help counteract criticism of any of Biden's problematic policies and statements related to race from decades ago.

We need someone who will be ready to take over the ticket in 2024 assuming Biden doesn’t want to run again (he will be 82 in 2024 and would be 86 at the end of a second term!).

I think he will run if he is able to. However, even if he doesn’t, I don’t think it’s safe to assume that his incumbent VP would clear the primary field, she would face a tough and competitive primary.

It's important, and it might have implications on future election cycles, but I'm not worried that the "wrong" choice will demotivate voters.

I'll pledge $100 to his campaign if he picks Elizabeth Warren for his VP.
