About people not wearing masks & losing their.."freedom." ? SEAT BELTS?

Last edited Thu Jul 16, 2020, 05:29 PM - Edit history (1)

...As I pointed this out before, we went through the same stupid comments about putting on "seat belts.""No one is going to make me put one on" it was said. After some time, the state governments passed laws requiring them. After some more time, people began to put them on automatically. I recall clearly talking with others about how the seatbelts saved them, and some others on how they wish they had on a seatbelt because of this injury or that injury. Or a friend who was killed because he/she did not have one on.
...These people interpreted, "freedom" as their right to .."not wear a seat belt"...Bicycle helmets when through the same stupidity. I knew someone who would be alive if helmets were required in the late 60s. He was on a bicycle and got hit by a car, and his head hit the cement. That killed him.
...Keep in mind, stupid is stupid, and some people are very stupid.. The stupid people come in all sizes, shapes, and backgrounds. Yes, "some stupid people" are smart in other areas like computers or whatever. But when it comes to safety demands, like masks, they become stupid. No, I don't know why they interpret wearing a mask as taking away their..."freedom."...I guess that they are just...plain stupid...Just like the anti-seatbelt advocates.

Because they don't necessarily protect OTHERS from harm. Refusing to take medically advised precautions during a pandemic is willfully endangering OTHERS.

I still see stupid guys racing down the freeway, splitting lanes, with no helmet, wearing shorts, a T-shirt, and sandals on some rice rocket bike.

I guess they believe they're invincible, somehow, or immortal, or something. Sadly, too many of them end up dead eventually.

With helmets and seat belts, for the most part you're only hurting yourself if you don't comply.

But refusing to wear a mask during a pandemic is more than just volunteering to risk acquiring the disease. It also runs the risk of spreading it to other people. And that's a huge difference.

Your freedom ends at the tip of my nose, as the saying goes, and that expression works well almost literally in the case of an airborne virus. People should not be free to infect other people.

Some of them online are like, "Wear a mask if YOU want to!" or "Stay home if YOU'RE scared!" They don't register that this is a bad virus that people can both catch AND transmit (and transmit even if they don't know they have it). I guess we will someday need to think about teaching basic epidemiology in school. I was mentioning to my wife too the other day, maybe mask-wearing while sick should become a norm in our country like it is in Asian countries. Just think how much healthier we might all be if we did that?

...”all men are created equal,” in which “average” stretches out in a broad space, not the downward left slope of a Bell Curve.

When I was growing up, “middle class” similarly was used very broadly. As an adult, I came to realize my parents were middle class largely in aspiration — but people with a lot more money than we had also considered themselves middle class.

Point of view.

Arson, shooting someone, punching someone, poisoning...etc.

Not wearing a mask during a pandemic is similar in that it endangers others lives if you don't wear a mask. The temporary order to wear a mask during a pandemic is needed due to the fact that it is proven to save lives.

Those who claim it is an infringement on their rights are simply wrong, imo. Once something has been proven to be for the common good the law in support of that action has been deemed constitutional. At least that is my understanding of the law.

Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Requiring people to wear masks is no different than requiring them to refrain from smoking in public places, not to protect themselves, but to protect the health of others in that space.

I was in a crash wearing a seat belt. Stopped at a Green Light and making a left hand turn into the road where I live. Going HOW fast driving? 5/10 mpr? Remember none of the impact.

Other than scrapes and bruises on my arm, all my injures were seat belt related to my chest. When I was taken to ER, they did a CAT/MRI (?) scan to my chest alone.

Women, you do not want to know what my breast looks like. Ok, I will admit that since I am very short and thin those seat belts probably do not fit me the way they are supposed to. Maybe I need a child booster seat?

My point? It is not One Size Fits ALL, including Seat Belt Safety.

So women who are smaller than the average man (most of us) will have injuries from not being the test size.
I think they have female adult crash test dummies now.

They are put in place to protect everyone. They don't take away rights; they preserve the right for everyone to get to their destination as safely as possible. They're installed to control flow, just like a mask. When someone ignores the signal, it can result in a bad outcome for themselves, others or everyone involved.

The maskholes' version of freedom is pretty much like anarchy: some may gain but civil society as a whole loses out.
