Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden was the main guest on Joy Reid's inaugural MSNBC prime time show Monday, and she tried to get him to divulge more information on who he might pick as his running mate. She had some general suggestions, too.
"Black women, in particular, have been the heartbeat of the Democratic Party for a long time," Reid said. "Are you committed to naming a Black woman as your vice presidential running mate?" He wasn't. "I am not committed to naming any but the people I've named, but among them there are four Black women," Biden said. "So that decision is underway right now." He did "guarantee" and "promise," however, that his administration "will look like America, both from vice president to Supreme Court to Cabinet positions to every major position in the White House."
"Have you narrowed down your choices?" Reid asked. "We've gone through about four candidates so far," Biden said, "and then when I get all the vetting done of all the candidates, then I'm going to narrow the list and then we'll see, and then I'm gonna have personal discussions with each of the candidates who are left and make a decision."
Reid began the show by playing clips from Chris Wallace's interview of President Trump on Fox News Sunday, then asking for Biden's reaction. She first showed Trump claiming that regarding the coronavirus pandemic, "no other country has done what we've done in testing we are the envy of the world." "I think he's right," Biden said. "No country has ever done what we've done: walk away. There is no leadership here. He actually has zero, zero. He surrendered. ... He was gonna be a wartime president, fighting this virus. Well, he raised the white flag. He has no idea what to do. Zero. It's only one thing he has in mind: How does he win re-election? And it doesn't matter how many people get COVID and/or die from COVID."

(3,282 posts)the four vetted candidates are
Harris
Lance-Bottoms
Demings
Warren.
I think the talk last week about Ball are just to throw people off the trail.
Of that group I think KLB and Demings are the best choices.
I worry a little bit that right now would be a bad time to nominate a cop as VP, but maybe it's the perfect time. The question would be in the vetting. Did anything happen during her (or her husbands) time as chief that would be a problem for the campaign. If either of them had a legitimate use of force complaint filed against them I think that would be disqualifying as well. So that'll be a big question when looking at Demings. Otherwise she is a perfect choice given that she is from Florida and her role as a House manager during impeachment.

(32,017 posts)I have great respect for her, but I dont want to see the Republicans running clips of her from the debates roasting Joe. Thats just really bad optics. She chose to challenge Joe to advance her position in the primaries. Now shes a liability as a VP candidate. She rolled the dice, and she lost. I prefer her as AG.

not wrong. She shot her shot. Also, she dropped out early and didn't endorse Joe when he really needed it in the run-up to Iowa. It doesn't really stand out as being there when you were needed if you wait until the rally is in full-force before endorsing.
Pretty clearly she was waiting to see it was safe before she came along. Lance-Bottoms endorsed Joe over a year ago. I think she was one of the very first to do so in fact.
Strategically, Harris probably brings the least value to the ticket. She's from a super safe state for us, she's well known so a lot of people already have their opinion of her formed, and you have those soundbites.

but I don't see where she's a good pick from a strategy standpoint.
He's older than I'd like to see in the VP. Biden and Trump are both old and Pence is now 61, although he seems older than that just thinking about him. I'd rather have somebody like KLB who is 50 and seems younger.
She's from California, which again is not much of a benefit as far as attracting voters goes. VPs don't have a big impact on getting voters, but there is a 1-2% bump in their home states. I'd rather see that bump in Florida or GA rather than Florida. Again, KLB is from GA and went to school in FL so she could have extra appeal in a couple of important states.
Ball is liberal, but I don't think you can really call her progressive and not progressive enough that she's going to move any of the progressive bunch that currently don't support Biden now. So, I just don't see where she brings something to the ticket that we can't get in better ways from somebody else.

(23,003 posts)Don't know about her time in central FL, never heard anything about it at the time, so hopefully nothing big bad happened. But that really is for the vetters to dig and see if there's any issues. If not, I think she would be absolutely perfect and hope it works out. I love Liz and I am certain she'd be a splendid VP, but am concerned with her age, so that's why Val is #1 in my book.
