Biden Has Opened Up Huge Lead
July 25, 2020 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
Trumps approval rate is 37% to 60%.
Democrats lead the generic congressional ballot, 51% to 37%.

(16,469 posts)The polls are showing that Americans are looking for a calmer, more common sense candidate. One who feels for the people, relates to them, can communicate hope to them.
Sticking to the issues important to them will get him elected. The chaos Trump is sowing is NOT working. Soon, they will see that it is their freedoms as well that will be suppressed if this police action on his part continues, not just for those who are doing the protesting. There are not 2 US Constitutions, one for Trumpers and one for everyone else.

(17,778 posts)I personally won't let up until Wed., Nov. 4. Make no mistake, it's going to be a tough slog, but there are a few things I think we've got going for us in 2020 that we didn't have in 2016....
- The country as a whole is tired of his bullshit. It's just not funny or interesting anymore. The shiny, new object is more than a little tarnished.
- Massive numbers of people are out of work and hundreds of thousands have died and will die due to a pandemic made far, far worse by his galactic fuck ups.
- The Dem candidate isn't polarizing, like Sec. Clinton. For whatever reason, she's a lightning rod. A very smart, capable and experienced lightning rod who I highly respect, but a lightning rod regardless. Psychologists could write volumes on why that is, but it simply is. Joe Biden isn't. He's likable, whatever the hell that means. He's well respected by many even in the Rethug camp. In short, he doesn't have the baggage Sec. Clinton had.
- Opposition to the current regime and Republicans in general is healthy in virtually all segments of US society...except racists and nazis. We're never going to penetrate that segment, but who would want to?

(10,499 posts)Rewritten history notwithstanding, Hillary Clinton was the most popular public figure in America for a few years. But I guess nobody remembers that anymore. Getting swift boated is rough.

(6,030 posts)1. trumpettes can't demonize Joe like they did Hillary (for over 20 years).
2. trump has to run on his 'record', or lack thereof.
3. trump resides over a botched pandemic and civil unrest.
4. There is a more defined Republicans for Biden.
5. trump's behavior is much more erratic than 4 years ago.
Vote like we are 15 points behind.

(32,328 posts)In 2016 too many people went to the polls, closed their eyes and said "eeny-meeny-miney-moe." That's how Chump got so many last-minute votes, people just didn't care or didn't bother.
This time - NOBODY is undecided, including many of those who voted for Chump last time. Many of those people regret it and wish they could take it back. We only hear the crazy ChumpHumpers who make noise and wear the stupid hats. But a LOT MORE have quietly decided they're not voting for him again.
I agree that this isn't 2016 but we still have to work very hard to overcome the lies, cheating and illegal voter suppression of the GOP. We all know it's happening and it will get worse.

(22,911 posts)The DNC was held from July 25 to 28 in 2016. Each party candidate usually jumps in popularity immediately after their national convention telefest, then the bump fades.

(2,005 posts)poll comparison from then); notice that Hillary is STILL under 50%, despite the big lead (she was at 48% in that poll). And the undecideds all apparently broke for Trump, enough for the NARROWEST of victories.
Biden is well over 50% in this poll (53% is not insignificant); it's a LOT harder to convince someone that actively wants to vote for Biden to switch to Trump than it is to convince undecideds to move that direction.
Your point is well taken; fight like hell still and stay vigilant. But I do see this as an extremely positive sign at this point in the race.

(15,018 posts)...wasn't just a blip or statistical anomaly.
It's a terrible shame, however, that it's taking the needless deaths of 100,000+ people for some of living to see Trump for what he is.

(9,874 posts)We have to account for Republican dirty tricks and outright fraud. And at least some in the mainstream media trying to tear Biden down to make it a closer race and gin up their profits. I think it was last week when Biden said something along the lines of Trump being the first racist president. WaPo had an article (not an opinion piece) saying that Biden was confused or wrong because weve had other racist presidents, like Woodrow Wilson. The writer was correct but also seemed to be trying to say that Joe gets confused and gets things wrong a lot. All the writer had to do was say that Biden was obviously referring to Trump as the the first openly racist president, but much of the article was showing that Biden was wrong.

(2,005 posts)that is; maybe too new? It also could be because I don't see a breakdown of WHO they polled in their sheet (unless I missed it; just "Likely Electorate", which they don't go into super detail about).
However, it's really not a huge outlier; seems to be trending in this direction.

(736 posts)but the past election outcome that worries me is Dewey vs Truman.
Dewey was ahead the whole race. Nobody gave Truman a chance, but he used his incumbency to pull off a narrow surprise victory. The power of incumbency is huge.
