Pompeo claims he didn't interact significantly with ousted Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday claimed he did not interact significantly with Marie Yovanovitch, the former ambassador to Ukraine who was ousted in 2019 after she defied Trump administration orders by cooperating with House investigations into President Donald Trump.

During a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo refused to answer questions from Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) on whether Yovanovitch, a key figure in impeachment proceedings, was a valued member of the State Department.

Pompeo repeatedly said he would not comment on personnel matters and chuckled at Kaine’s line of questioning.

“You might think these questions are silly, but when somebody works for their entire career for the State Department and they are slandered with lies and sacked for no good reason, that sends a message that could be not clearer to other State Department officials,” Kaine said. “And it may be just a big joke — I mean, hey, look at you smiling and laughing and calling it silly. I don't think it’s silly to Marie Yovanovitch or the people who work for you.”
