Mitch McConnell Could Rescue Millions. What Is He Waiting For?
The economy is in dire shape. Millions of Americans are about to lose federal aid. The Senate is going on vacation.
by The Editorial Board
Congress needs to extend the emergency aid programs that were created in March to help Americans endure a broad suspension of economic activity. Instead, even as the pandemic rages on, Congress is allowing those aid programs to expire...The abject failure to act is not the fault of Congress in a collective sense. House Democrats passed a serviceable aid bill more than two months ago. Responsibility for the current debacle rests specifically and squarely on the shoulders of the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, and the other 52 Senate Republicans.
From the moment Congress passed the last big coronavirus aid bill, in March, it has been a matter of public record that the aid was going to end in August.
For a time, there was reason to hope that the worst of the pandemic could be over by now, too. But it has been clear for weeks that the United States has failed to control the pandemic and that many Americans still would need economic aid beyond July. Yet Mr. McConnell and his caucus chose to spend the summer confirming federal judges (like an unqualified crony for his state of Kentucky) rather than confronting the crisis.
Only in recent days have Republicans belatedly begun a frantic effort to devise a coherent response to the crisis. Like students who wait until the night before an assignment is due, they have pleaded for more time and asked if they could submit a part of the work. The nation will suffer the consequences...

(21,859 posts)hold office ever again in this Country. When rump is gone, every republican will be asked 'where were you?' when questions are asked later on in trying to repair the damages, to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again. The corruption, the ignoring of emoluments clause, the sidestepping by the WH of what the Supreme Court has ruled on DACA (ignoring the Supreme Court ruling), etc.
And where were republicans? Where? No matter if they retire, quit, resign, whatever, everyone of these people should be made to answer for their ridiculous and obviously very one sided and tainted behavior while ignoring what America, the Country needed, and causing literally the deaths of thousands of Americans.

(9,998 posts)I won't mind so much if President Biden invites some of the Lincoln Project folks to serve in his Administration.
I think that their support of Mr. Biden should be rewarded. And now that they're helping to turn the Senate control to the Democratic party, it shows that they're fed up with the way others are running the party.

(11,095 posts)but the idea that Biden would invite Rs (including LP people) into an administration -- will be met with a screaming crescendo of outrage from supporters. Reconciliation and "forgive and forget" is simply not going to fly with the people that brought this (average Joe) candidate across the finish line. And (IMO) constitutes a real misreading of the mood and tenor of the country.

(1,206 posts)I am really surprised that they didn't act.
There is a very good chance that I attributed a modicum of good will to them where none was warranted and that they are in fact as bad as I feared, as they can't be so stupid to think that America won't hold them accountable for this.

(13,037 posts)He is waiting for millions of renters and mortgage holders to be thrown out on the street. He is waiting for millions of children to starve. And he is waiting for thousands of small businesses to go out of business forever. Meanwhile Mitch's friends with large corporations will be able to steal millions of the taxpayers' money. He is an evil bastard.
