(64,414 posts)Even though he was with the Cards, Lou & Curt Flood were in my top 5 favorite players not on the Cubs.
Probably since before I was 10.
That stung at times since Lou was involved in one of the worst trades ever. StL gets Lou, Cubs get Ernie Broglio.
I can still remember my dad shouting "What?!?!?" when he heard it on the news.
Now, my favorite Cub was Billy Williams, and they both played left field. But, with Lou's speed he could have been in center.
Trades like that is why the Cubs went 108 years between WS titles! We had sweet Lou and traded an all-time great for a candy bar.
Hope Lou is in a place with no catchers who can throw him out!

(9,035 posts)Cubs. Broglio had been a 20 game winner a couple of years before, and Brock was a largely unknown kid. Turned out Broglio was pretty much done, and Brock sparked the Cards to pennants in 1964, 67 an d 68 on the way to Cooperstown.

(64,414 posts)Pitching was not a problem. The teams were bad for 5 or 6 years despite having Banks, Santo, & Williams, because the outfield was awful, and the middle infield stunk. (ROY Ken Hubbs died in a plane crash)
They still had Ellsworth, but now body else. One pitcher wasn't going to help as much as a lightning fast base stealer, with .300 ability.
And the history says Broglio was a concern around the league because of the stress his motion put on his shoulder. The whole league knew, especially the Cards.
They traded a "20 game winner" for an "unknown kid" because they're stupid?
Within 8 years of that trade, the Cards went to the WS once, winning 2.
Cub fans were very unhappy when that trade happened.
I admit I was a little kid when it happened, but with everybody on both sides of the family Cubs fans, it was impossible for me not to hear about the team!
My dad was, for sure, disgusted.

(66,091 posts)Lou Brock was one of the few baseball legends from whom I got an autographed ball. Sat on my bookshelf for years when I was a kid.
RIP...

(64,414 posts)...he would have been dubbed Charlie Hustle when Rose was "Pete Who?"
He had enormous physical gifts, yet he played so hard!
He didn't make a lot of great catches in the outfield because he took off so quick & ran so hard that he was standing or jogging when he caught the ball. If Lou didn't catch up to it, nobody could!
His autograph is among the things that disappeared when my parents' estate was liquidated. I didn't have many autographs from non-Cubs, but I had Lou's.

(952 posts)I was too young to know about trades. But he became my #1 favorite player on the Cardinals teams of his era.

(62,344 posts)saw him in person only a couple times, but boy was it exciting.
He was exciting to watch at the plate, in the field and of course on the bases. He was a complete player.
Lou is one of my all time favorite baseball players.
