Poll: Americans united on a slew of issues, despite contentious election season

As the U.S. heads into the final, 50-day sprint of a 2020 campaign in which political polarization has hit a fever pitch, new polling out on Tuesday reveals numerous points of bipartisan consensus among the American public on the rights and values key to the country’s national identity.

Moreover, the survey — conducted for Harvard University’s Carr Center for Human Rights and Institute of Politics and obtained by POLITICO ahead of its release — found that more than 7 in 10 Americans believe they have more in common with one another than many people think.

It also found that most Americans hold an expansive view of their rights beyond those explicitly laid out in the Constitution, but which they say are under threat.

The right to clean air and water, for example, was considered important by 93 percent of those surveyed; protection of personal data, by 93 percent; the right to a quality education, by 92 percent; racial equality, by 92 percent; affordable health care, by 89 percent; and the right to a job, by 85 percent.

There's hope for us yet! A majority of the issues are liberal too

This election is not about issues. It will be about emotions. Midnight Writer Sep 2020 #6

Dems lead on virtually all of those issues, with the Repub position being somewhere between "it's a hoax" and "so what? Not the gov't's job."

Every major part of that polled 60-75% favorable. But bundle it all up together and label it "Obamacare" and it was somehow "controversial."

Sometimes it's hard not to think we're doomed.

Yet around 30-35% seem to be hard-core Trump supporters (and he polls over 40%), which many have stated is because they are racists. How to explain the discrepancy? Some possibilities: 1) Many do not know they are racists. 2) They are not racists per se, just racially insensitive (do not recognize racism). 3) They don't realize that Trump is encouraging racism. 4) They have other issues that are so important (think abortion), that they tolerate Trump's racial divisiveness.
