By SCOTT BAUER
MADISON, Wis. (AP) A Republican member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission advised a Green Party representative about who to hire as an attorney after its presidential nominee was denied ballot access in the key battleground state, records obtained by The Associated Press show.
The commission deadlocked 3-3 Aug. 20 on whether to put Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins on the ballot. All three Republicans were in favor, while all three Democrats were against. Hawkins asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to put him on, but the court in a 4-3 ruling Monday rejected that request. The court also lifted an order it issued last week pausing the mailing of absentee ballots while it considered the challenge.
The email string obtained Monday by the AP under an open records request shows that commission member Bob Spindell emailed Kevin Zeese, then-press secretary for Hawkins, less than 24 hours after the commission voted to keep him off the ballot. Zeese died of a heart attack at age 64 on Sept. 5, the Green Party announced on Sept. 6.
Spindell, a Republican who supported putting Hawkins on the ballot, wrote to Zeese that he was very sorry. but not surprised, the three Democrat Commissioners fought hard to keep the Green Party off the Ballot.

(1,993 posts)Theyre a farther left party than the Dems. Theyre a force to be reckoned with all over Europe. They are a genuine party competing with us.
When you accuse them of being here just to spoil the election, youre speaking with an amazing amount of entitlement and ignorance. Theyre here, theyre here to stay, theyre a legit left-wing party, and youd better quit whining about their existence and instead learn to appeal to their base.

(95,237 posts)In Europe, under parliamentary systems, they are a legitimate party, and one I could well support.
Here, they are merely a tool of the christo-fascist right, and the only question is the degree to which its candidates are witting or unwitting assets to the worst elements of reaction in our polity. Certainly Republican operatives are aware of that, and funnel them cash and provide legal support for their spoiler efforts.

(3,691 posts)Given their "farther left" status you'd think they'd be reluctant to even compete in races where their 4% or 5% could swing the election to the far right party. After 2016 I doubt that they will get 5% anywhere in 2020. Their absence from the WI ballot is a result of them missing some deadline. If they can't even meet timeliness guidelines are they really ready for prime time?

(53,475 posts)They don't seem to run candidates for state and local offices but appear like clockwork every presidential cycle to siphon off votes from the Democratic presidential nominee so repugs can win tight races in battleground states? And they are always aided by repug operatives.
What's up with that? And I'm talking about the American Green party, not the European Green Party.

(34,174 posts)you should check out the party's history in US elections since 2000 as well as the candidates and their affiliations. Jill Stein is about as "left-wing" as Vladimir Putin.

Our side can get even by creating a shadow group that would appeal to the Confederate wannabes that slither among us. Is the States' Rights Party still in existence? Strom Thurmond once belonged to it.
