They're hoping that it keeps them motivated to vote. If they know he's going to lose, they're less likely to show up.

This is why Democrats should not shy away from predicting victory. While over confidence leading to complacency can be problematic, honest straight forward confidence is not, it is a psychological tool among other things. The scent of victory is driving Democratic turnout, not the opposite.

Biden could be predicted to win by 20 points and I think people would still show up.

I'm not sure complacency (as opposed to apathy) is really ever much of an issue for leading campaigns. People naturally like to back a winner, even if subconsciously.

PTSD from 2016 IMO, and for this race I don't think that is productive.

This is nothing like 2016, of course. It's more like 2018. But I can't really blame people for being a bit hesitant, especially if internal polls are showing it closer than it appears (which is possible; no idea, really). There's also some concern that there aren't enough quality state polls available in some areas so races that appear to be solid may not be entirely so.

All that being said, Biden has been trending upward, Trump's approval/disapproval has been historically stable, and there's little reason to believe that there's more than a few percent of voters that are even considering a switch this late. I personally think that the only question remaining is the margin of victory on the EC side, barring an unprecedented event.

They like to be bully and want to know that they are backing the winner. That's why they are 10x more loud since Trump won. If they know Trump is losing or is a "loser", they will leave.

...demotivates.

That is exactly the opposite of the truth.

There is a small window between, say (voter-dependent) -3 and +3 points, where voters are motivated. Below that, it seems out of reach; above that, it seems other voters will take care of it. In that zone, we feel we have influence.

they want to believe that the shit they're doing is OK because that mythical silent majority supports it, when in fact the majority of Americans don't support Trump and his bullshit but usually are too disconnected and apathetic to vote about it.

It is looking like the public is waking up and swarming to the polls.
