The son of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy helped Donald Trump in 2005 secure nearly $700 million in loans to construct a skyscraper in Chicago, despite Trumps reputation for defaulting on business loans, the New York Times reported on Tuesday evening.
According to the report, Justin Kennedy, who ran the German banks commercial real estate team and was close with the presidents daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, was willing to overlook Trumps shoddy history as a debtor, getting the future president to personally guarantee $40 million of the loan. Both Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump currently work in the White House.

In Dark Towers: Deutsche Bank, Donald Trump and an Epic Trail of Destruction, finance editor of the New York Times David Enrich described how Justin Kennedy was drawn to Trumps risk-taking and glamour while he was shepherding lucrative loans to Trumps private businesses, even after the banks clients took massive losses when Trumps Atlantic City casinos went bankrupt. After Trumps election, the family reportedly set their sights on persuading Justice Kennedy to step down so the president could appoint a second justice to the bench.
Trumps flattery was part of a coordinated White House charm offensive designed to persuade the ageing justice for years, the courts pivotal swing vote that it was safe to retire, even with an unpredictable man in the Oval Office, Enrich wrote.

So, that was back in late '80's. yeah? I can imagine the temptations trump could offer the banker kid.

(268,871 posts)The connections between Kennedy and Trump, per the New York Times report are surprisingly deep, given the presidents general lack of DC experienceand Trump and his allies exploited them to perfection, encouraging the swing justice to retire before the 2018 midterms, which could return control of the Senate back to Democrats. Trump nominated Neal Gorsuch, a former Kennedy clerk, to replace Scalia shortly after assuming office. Ivanka Trump visited the Supreme Court a week before Kennedys retirement as the justices guest. Kennedy has, over the last two years, sided with the Trump administration in a number of narrow rulings.

Deutsche Bank and was told of he stepped down, there would be no charges or investigation.
So Justice Kennedy was coerced to step down to protect his son.
