Shocking photos and videos detail horrific scene after two-day ice storm in Oklahoma, Kansas & TexasOctober 28, 2020
By Sarah K. Burris
Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas have been dealing with a brutal attack from three different ice and sleet systems for two days. It has left communities looking like war zones with trees and debris littering the streets and as of Wednesdays third wave, over 368,000 people are without power in Oklahoma.
Power lines were filmed popping, starting fires with blue flashes of electricity.

Oklahoma took the brunt of the hit from the storm, plunging the state from a colorful Autumn into trees, flowers and multi-colored leaves completely encased in ice.
One of the most heartbreaking problems was the Survivor Tree, a tree that remained standing despite the horrific bombing on the Alpha P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995. The tree has lasted through the bombing as well as 25 years of storms, tornadoes, hurricane-force winds, snowstorms and ice. But 2020s ice storm took down a large branch on the north side of the tree, sending it tipping and possibly uprooting itself.

(34,058 posts)We got only a little ice here in Eastern Kansas. We were lucky that the snow was also scant. Sometimes those storms leave a beautiful scene but it only takes a little more for it to be tragic. I hope everyone can recover quickly.

I used to love waking up to see a beautiful sparkling world outside after a nighttime ice storm. SIt was sort of like the film A Christmas Story, but I never experienced anything like these ice storms.

(17,248 posts)The entire block across the street from us has been dark since Monday. A large tree in the yard across from us snapped in half and fell into the street. The ice is melting now, and it's coming down from the trees and utility lines in sheets. Quite dangerous to walk under them.
We lost power for about two minutes, but otherwise we've been okay. Lots of small to medium tree branches down in the back yard, but nothing too serious. We're among the lucky ones.
ETA:.The Survivor Tree should be okay. They had an emergency plan in place for it for such an event, and while it lost one big branch, it looks like most of it will make it through this.
