Both Candidates Might Fall Short Of 270 Electoral Votes On Election Night. But How Close Might They Get?

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/both-candidates-might-fall-short-of-270-electoral-votes-on-election-night-but-how-close-might-they-get/

Just going to put the headers - read for the text and graphs

Georgia is the race to watch at 7 p.m.

North Carolina could be a bellwether at 7:30 p.m.

A flurry of results at 8 p.m., including vital swing states

Texas and Arizona are the big prizes at 9 p.m.

Tight races and slow counts in the 10 p.m. hour

11 p.m. states are all deep red or deep blue

Alaska and Hawaii won’t tell us much

Trump has WAY more power to force issues in the days after.

Biden needs to win that night.

Trump needs FL, GA, AND NC for any of his paths to work. If he loses any of them, he is pushing up daisies no matter what kinds of games he plays.

Joe can win without any of them through multiple paths. So while neither will get to 270 unless they have a very good or very russian night, we will likely know trumps chances earlier than later.

Just don't put any of those states on your drinking card.

Are swing/swingish states that allow mail in ballots to be counted before the election. Doesn’t mean they have to, but they can.

The other swing states don’t start counting mail in ballots until Election Day. Some may even wait until after the polls close to start counting.

PA Gov Wolf thinks “a majority” of the PA votes should be counted by Friday. Tuesday night could very well be and end as a red mirage.

Right now I’ll be looking at North Carolina-Florida-Arizona-Nevada-Montana on election night for an early indication of how this might all end.
