(45,806 posts)though. We borrowed a generator from my son. It wasn't big enough to power the whole house, so I cooked on a hot plate, had no hot water, & no furnace. The only thing that really bothered us was that it got down to the high 40's overnight, so it was quite chilly in the AM!

(60,010 posts)Used to be adventurous and challenging. Now it was a PITA....Esp. those chilly nights.
I declare fleece should be the national fabric. a lifesaver, eh?
Finally got cell service, sent out an SOS to my 2 sons who live in Puget Sound , home of the amazon gods, when I heard we might be powerless till the 3rd!!!
They overnighted a 2 burner camping stove, another big Mag light with led bulb, and a ton of D batteries, which will arrive tomorrow, so naturally the power came on a few hours ago, because if I HAD run out of batteries, it would have not come back, right?
glad you are warm and well tonight...

(16,820 posts)I've been in the hospital throughout this event, and I'm kind of glad. Most people here in Gulfport, MS are still without power. It's dangerous on the streets because the street lights are out and a lot of people aren't honoring the rule about making every intersection without a sign or a light into a 4-way stop. My mom told me that there are lots of wrecks because of all the people not ceding the right-of-way when they should, and that just ties the traffic up that much worse. That storm blew through here in about a couple of hours or less, but did a hell of a lot of damage!

I'm appreciative that you are ok...that's kinda what I am hearing, yes?

(16,820 posts)The people that come here nowadays aren't so interested in fishing and water skiing, though. I don't know how long it's going to be before they get all the casinos going again, but they really need to bring them all on land. It's silly for one of your biggest industries to get knocked out every ten years or so because of these storms. Not many people were hurt, though, and we're all grateful. All that other junk can be replaced, and this will all be over soon.

(5,164 posts)We lost power after the aftermath of Isais blew threw. Our street came back after 2 days but the other side was out for 5 days. Fortunately my generator worked! Tons of big trees were down on power lines.

(60,010 posts)Had to fire up the outdoor grill, boil water and take sponge baths. My limit seems to be 3 days until
showers become all encompassing fantasy.
And here's to Nook and Power banks and converting cigarette lighter in the car. Back lit reading screen was
the major key to not going nutz.
The neighbor has a gas stove and water heater. I'm seriously gonna price that idea. Ya get to a certain age and roughing it is very passe'.

(64,427 posts)We went 8 days on generator once.
Tornado went right over the center of town. We live right in the center of town.
Never touched down. It did touch 5 miles SW & 18 miles NE. Did tremendous damage there.
Our home wasn't damaged, but boy did we lose the huge branches.
Again, glad you came out the other side in good shape.

(60,010 posts)damn near every house on the street had one.

(64,427 posts)An expensive way to get electricity, but far better than no electricity.
Of course, that incident happened when Silverspoon George's economic plan let gas spin up to $3.90 a gallon!
We have a 3 year plan to get a natural gas gen set with bumpless transfer. In that sort of urgent need, moving the car, pulling the generator, getting it running, running the labeled extension cords, probably in the dark...
Not sure I want to deal with that as I get to my last 60s.
We'll see.

(60,010 posts)I had heard we were gonna get the tropical storm part. We are only 90 miles due north of Pensacola.
Tropical storms usually do the rainy, some low lying flooding, with some wind., up here.
But listening to it come in Wed. night sounded a lot more hurricaney, you know that sound they make.
It hit harder that we were expecting.
Our house is well protected, wasn't worried about that bit. But...country...lots of country roads.

We NEED our trees! Their byproduct is oxygen (converted from carbon dioxide) - which we, um, kinda NEED... for human AND planetary SURVIVAL. That's all.
