How are the evangelicals taking the loss? Do they feel that God has lost control?

(3,401 posts)...a personal relationship with Christ because he is catholic.
Now Trump who admittedly is unfaithful to all of his wives, had his own wife pose nude for GQ magazine, cant name a single book in the Bible or a favorite verse, racist, misogynistic, narcissistic, compulsive liar, most certainly has a personal relationship with Christ and considers himself the chosen one... at least he aint Catholic.

(8,261 posts)Evangelicals think of Catholics as non-Christian. I still believe the greatest political speech ever given was Jesus Sermon on the mount. If we lived out lives by that, we would live in a much nicer world.

(7,405 posts)I was raised in a Southern Baptist family. My relatives have issues with practices of Roman Catholicism -- namely confession and iconography -- but they consider them Christian.
Now that aside, I married into a Roman Catholic family, one with priests and nuns aplenty. The derision and condescension I've heard from my in-laws (and other Catholics) about Baptists/Methodists/evangelicals matches sentiments from the other side of that chasm.
I watch everyone's petty resentments and roll my eyes. They have the same motivations, share similar cultural conservatism, all vote for the same measures and politicians. I see them all as peas in a pod.

(11,486 posts)Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
Northern ConservativeBaptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

Get Republicans on record being asked "Are Catholics Christians?" so they either say yes and piss off anti-Catholic evangelicals or say no (or just hedge) and piss off Catholics.
This is what conservatives did back in the 70s and 80s: Find a couple of hot-button issues to promote (e.g., guns and abortion) and get people to single-issue vote on them to pry apart Union and ethnic voting blocs. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

That is the sound of maniacal laughter and he gets his delusional flock to join him. See how much fun they're having? See how they represent Chrisianity?
They won't accept Biden as President. They will listen to these money grubbing charlatans before they use their own eyes and ears to see and hear the truth.

(15,018 posts)I can sorta, kinda get why someone who is smooth and polished, who is charismatic in a more universal way, might not work for many of the cult-inclined. A lot of these people specifically hate "elites", so I can see why some rough edges help make a person more appealing for them.
But what I see with Trump, with this preacher, with so many other religious con artists and political "strong men", is way beyond a few rough edges and a bit of folksiness. There is often plain weird, disturbing behavior, blatant character flaws, and levels of insincerity a three-year-old should be able to detect.

Read your New Testament. Pay real close attention to the red words. You wont find anything even close to resembling Trump in any of them, except, perhaps, in Christs warnings against False Shepherds that will lead the Sheep astray.
Trump also makes a cameo on Revelation. Hes a dragon.

(15,358 posts)Of when something bad happens to republicans or good to democrats, it's God (I'm an atheist). Originally, I hoped that conservative religious people would see how silly it is to claim God is punishing New Orleans for homosexuality or the country for abortion or because Obama was president, etc., but I once again had too much faith in my fellow humans.
Now it's just to piss them off. I'm comfortable with that.

(317 posts)Our priest came very close to saying "vote Biden" last week. My doctor said it was the same with her priest. The basic tenant of the Catholic Church is social justice and taking care of others. Joe displays those things in spades. After 74 yrs as a Lutheran, I converted & was amazed how much the Catholics are truly devoted to these basic teachings of Jesus. Never saw it this much in action!

flotsam
(3,268 posts)When I was in church it was every bit about a relationship between myself, my ethics, and a "god" I always found nebulous. I never had a moments discomfort that others believed "more" than I did. As a mere lapsed catholic I felt my moral foundation, other than supporting women's right to control the flow of life from their bodies, was highly in accord with the tenants of our more liberal popes. The thought of a priest, a bishop, or a cardinal or even a pope directing a congregation as to how to vote would make me puke. Fuck any charlatan that claims moral authority over a parishioner-you lead only by teaching-never by directing.

But I doubt it. The mythical Jesus would spit in their face while denying them thrice, and sure as "hell" wouldn't let them through the pearly gates.

(42,643 posts)I do not get on well at all with the very religious. All of my closest family, my wife, and her immediate family, plus the vast majority of all my friends are atheists or at minimum, non-believer agnostic types. We all hate Trump and RWers to the bone. I look on with horror at what many on this site go through with their families. I would never speak again to a family member who supports white power vermin (especially as I am racially mixed and a lesbian, and they would be advocating for me never existing or for me being enslaved or imprisoned or murdered).
