Asia Today: S. Korea starts fining people not wearing masks

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has reported its biggest daily jump in COVID-19 cases in 70 days as the government began fining people who fail to wear masks in public.

The 191 cases added to the country’s caseload Friday represented the sixth consecutive day of over 100 and the highest daily increase since Sept. 4 when authorities reported 198 new infections.

More than 120 of the cases were from the Seoul metropolitan area, where the coronavirus has spread in a variety of places, including hospitals, nursing homes, churches, schools, restaurants and offices.

The steady spread of the virus has alarmed government officials, who eased social distancing measures to the lowest level since October to soften the pandemic’s shock on the economy.

The "economy" is dead....anyone making a living that depends on people being in close physical proximity is bankrupt or shifting deck chairs on Titanic at this point. Pretending this is not real will not magically revive the economy, nor will it reduce the suffering of the people. It is like brain function, once the neurons are starved of oxygen, they die very fast and they never come back. THAT is your former economy in a nutshell.

Nations need to start accepting the fact that the extractive and influence economies are about to go over a cliff right next to the tourism, travel and casual dining economies. Consumers cannot drive economic activity once the flow of capital THROUGH the economy is ended. The rich and the ones who have amassed fortunes on the backs or work of others will need to be FORCED to sacrifice or society itself will fall. It's happened before - met any Incans, Aztecs or Athenians lately? It's happening again...

If it can't be drive-thru, delivery or curb-drop...retail sales are dead until late-2021 AT BEST.
Rent and REIT income are already dropping and stressed to a bad point, they can't hold out much longer in the fake economic 'recovery' or 'reopening' or pause before the next mandatory shelter in place shut down.

People seem to believe that we are actually in charge of this somehow...we're NOT - the best outcome we can hope for is to arrest the outbreak and cut off transmission long enough to survive until the virus re-emerges at a later date.
