Sources say outgoing Democratic Rep. Max Rose is mulling run for NYC mayor

Yahoo News

Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y., is considering a quick return to politics after losing his House seat this month. Rose has begun laying the groundwork for a potential mayoral campaign in New York City, according to three different sources.

A Democratic fundraiser said Rose has started making calls soliciting donors to back a potential mayoral bid. Two other sources familiar with the situation confirmed Rose has been having initial conversations to drum up support.

“He’s talked to people about it,” one high-profile New York City political operative said of Rose.

All three sources requested anonymity to discuss Rose’s private maneuvering. Rose did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The congressman, who was first elected as part of the “blue wave” that swept Congress in 2018, has earned a reputation as one of the more moderate Democrats in the House. Rose’s district, which includes Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, is a uniquely red stretch of solidly blue New York City.

He can form a good moderate Dem coalition and pick up some of the crazies in the bargain, if their only alternative is another de Blasio type.

If he can convince enough liberals and progressives that it's him or one of these GOP kooks, he has plenty of Dem bona fides to at least make a go of it. I think somebody like Hoylman should make a run, but I guess he wants to be Manhattan BP first.

Too many Deblasio clones are even left of him throwing their hat in the ring....he has been a huge drag on our party not only in NYC but the entire area...he has made it possible for an R to win the mayor position again unfortunately

He would prob draw give or take in SI....and win the rest of the city. Our side needs a better alternative to continuing Deblasio's policies ad hoc...he has been a disaster overall here in NYC, especially in the last year or so. A whole slate of Deblasio clones or more left and we could possibly lose the mayor seat to a moderate R if one emerges.

Raymond J. McGuire, one of the highest-ranking and longest-serving Black executives on Wall Street, announced on Thursday morning that he is leaving his post at Citigroup to prepare for a run for the Democratic nomination for mayor, just eight months before the primary.

Mr. McGuire, 63, a vice chairman at Citigroup, had been mulling a potential run for months. Although he is well known in the financial world — he was one of three finalists in 2018 to become president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York — he is far less known to voters, who must be persuaded to back a first-time candidate over more established rivals.
