The 10-day event is a long-standing tradition that usually attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the country. Despite opposition from local residents this year, the rally took place, complete with crowded bars and nearby concerts.
This year, about 460,000 people attended, according to the report, published Friday in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
In neighboring Minnesota, the state's health department investigated a Covid-19 outbreak tied to the rally and found at least 51 residents had attended the rally and became sick, and an additional 35 people were infected after coming into contact with a person who went to the rally, the report said. Those 35 people were household, social and workplace contacts, it said.

(15,958 posts)I suspect that a lot of the breakouts in various places around the country can be linked to super spreader events, like the Sturgis motorcycle rally and Trump's rallies. I'm convinced (though I can't prove it) that at least some of the surge here in Illinois is related to Trump's various apoearances in Wisconsin. I would LOVE to know how many people from Illinois attended those things and brought the plague back to the Land of Lincoln with them. We were doing really well in this state, keeping our curve pretty flat for quite a while. Then things started to flare up in Wisconsin AND Trump visited Wisconsin like 5 times, and next thing you know corona cases next door in Illinois are through the roof. Coincidence? I don't think so!
