Heartbreaking tweets from Nebraska's COVID-19 front lines

Kelly Cawcutt, MD, MS, infectious diseases expert and critical care physician at Nebraska Medical Center

Holding the hand of my sweet patient when she asked if she was going to die. And having to say yes, I believe you will.

Or calling yet another family to say I have done everything I can, I’ve used all the life support measures I have, but you’re loved one is dying. Would you like to come finally visit?

Or coming home & breaking down in tears because so many have patients died & the burden is so hard to carry for all of us. And then we see inadequate action to stop the growing weight of lives lost.

Telling a mom who was intubated and sedated for weeks because of covid that we had to deliver her extremely premature baby and that he didn’t make it.

Dustin Krutsinger, MD, pulmonologist at Nebraska Medical Center

Taking care of a young lady with Down Syndrome who is on the ventilator.

I picture my sister, who is the same age and also has Down’s.

Shaun Thompson, MD, critical care anesthesiologist at Nebraska Medical Center

Having to call a loved one to inform them that their mother died only to learn that they were bringing their father in to the ED because of COVID and needing ICU care

Of course, the shirt-wearer could be lying. MAGAts lie a lot. They revel in them. Hermit-The-Prog Nov 2020 #9

It is both heartbreaking and enraging to know so much of this suffering could have been avoided.

Don't for a moment think that all these people independently came to the conclusion that the pandemic is a hoax, the countermeasures are ineffective, and the disease is no biggie. They have been carefully coached and taught by the Trump administration and its toadying sycophants in Congress and the media.

We have Republican Senators, Republican members of the House, and elected Republicans at state and local levels who deny COVID-19 is a problem even when they get it. The Republican death cult is insane.

Koch, Murdoch, the Mercers and others, who are both beneficiaries of Republican policies and fund the election of ever more extremist Republicans, continue to fund the disinformation campaigns that fuel the horrendous death toll and the suffering from a collapsing economy that will last years.

Will go right out and vote Republican again next time.

And they will think they have done the right thing.

They know not what they do, but I am not their father, and I do not forgive them.
