(AP) - A Pennsylvania appeals court judge ordered state officials on Wednesday to halt any further steps toward certifying election results.
The ruling comes a day after Gov. Tom Wolf said he had certified Democrat Joe Biden as the state's winner of the presidential election.
It wasnt immediately clear if the order from Commonwealth Court Judge Patricia McCullough could hold up the certification of state and local contests on the ballot or interrupt the scheduled Dec. 14 meeting of the states 20 electors.
"To the extent that there remains any further action to perfect the certification of the results of the 2020 General Election for the offices of President and Vice President of the United States of America, Respondents are preliminarily enjoined from doing so, pending an evidentiary hearing to be held on Friday, November 27, 2020 at 11:30 am via WebEx," according to the judge's order.

(15,246 posts)In PA, judges face retention elections every 10 years and are required to retire at age 75. She was retained in 2019 and won't race another retention election until 2029. Luckily Pennsylvanians have long memories.

(16,616 posts)Sometimes attorneys do something that looks like one thing, but it's actually a Trojan Horse for something else they want to accomplish down the road. (Senator Whitehouse talks about this strategy a lot).

(15,246 posts)Act 77 is what expanded rules for absentee ballot voting, essentially making PA a "no excuse absentee ballot" state.

(1,798 posts)And I think people are just gut reacting and not actually reading the links or the injunction.
In theory this should only affect down ballot votes. BUT the injunction does clearly speak to the top of the ballot as well. Whether it has any teeth seems super doubtful to me as a layman though.

(15,246 posts)but could affect the down ballot elections. Even then, I think the only down ballot election that could be affected would be the Brewster/Zicarelli SD47 state senate seat. I'm not sure how this effects the ballots the state supreme court said should be counted in Allegheny and Philadelphia counties.
The ruling says to the "extent (results) haven't been certified" the state is enjoined from doing so, but Wolf signed the presidential cert yesterday after Secy of State Boockvar certified it after she got all the certified results from the counties.
The order says that the state told her the down ballot elections had not been certified. The state is enjoined from certifying them. That would mean no state house and half the state senate, both controlled by Rs. I guess Gov Wolf could govern by fiat in that scenario.
