Your efforts in the battle for democracy are appreciated and welcomed. Sure, you will occasionally run across those whose temperament will not allow for forgiveness or acceptance. Do not let it bother you. I can assure you they are few and far between, so bring it in Steve. You are welcome here.

(25,816 posts)I used to think that MAYBE the GOP would start transitioning back to something resembling a rational political party, but from what we're seeing, now, that's probably never going to happen.
More 'peel offs' to either an independent status willing to work with Democrats, or making the BIG leap to BECOME Democrats would be a thing of beauty.
Anything to make Congress work for the people, again, and not just for themselves.

(8,144 posts)I believe that anyone that admits they were wrong deserves to be welcomed. Because lets face it, the Conservative party has lost their way. Its not your fathers conservatives anymore. I dont know enough words to describe what they have become. Steve knows those words and rattles em off his tongue so beautifully that I want him to speak for me. Let them have it Steve. Show them how wrong they have been all along. They need to listen to us because weve lost all respect for 40% of Americans. We are not the enemy. Putin is. North Korea cant be trusted either. Were literally laughed at around the world. People, everyone wants to move onto a kinder nation. Welcome Steve.
Anybody else out there going to join him here? 🤷🏻?♀️

(14,347 posts)Not everyone in this party has to be progressive. Not everyone has to be centrist. Not everyone has to be conservative. The truth is, we need them all, provided they all put country before ideology and engage in honest debate on what they think is best for the American people, not special interests, billionaire donors, or corporations.

(11,471 posts)Of course he burned bridges, but I thought, at most, he would become an independent. This is not a huge surprise, but a surprise nonetheless, and a very welcome one.
A welcome I am happy to extend to a man so adept and bold. He is a consummate analyst with a great facility with the language...a facility he is very willing to unleash.
Things to be truly pleased about are few and far between, these days (the Presidential election a huge exception, of course) and it's nice to have a gift like this bestowed.
Biden/Harris, a vaccine, Steve Schmidt....maybe it will be an early spring.

(135 posts)I think it's vitally important to welcome those who are ready to switch. I voted for Bush and had an impeach sign in my window just a few months after he took office. I am grateful to those who welcomed me. I caucused for John Dean in the primary and voted for Kerry in the general. Been a card carrying Democrat since.

(45,868 posts)And a belated welcome to DU.
My husband was an "I pay too much in taxes" independent when I met him. He finally became a democrat before he died. He was such a good liberal I trusted him to mark my sample ballot for me.

(45,868 posts)Happy to have him. I hope he learns, though, that we're the Democratic party. Everyone makes a mistake from time to time.
