There were lead and zinc mines all over the place in that part of the country, some within a couple of miles from our house. They all had huge piles of "tailings" which was the waste material from the excavations.

When someone was doing building projects that required gravel, they would just drive to one of those closed mines and load up for free. My dad used this gravel to mix concrete for the footings for our house and as the surface for our driveway. We had no idea.
