Book published nearly 25 years ago predicted America would hit a great crisis climaxing around 2020

and that up next is a millennial vs. boomer standoff that will usher in a new world order

America sees a "turning" every 20 years as one generation displaces another, and the dynamic between one particular generation entering "elderhood" and another entering "young adulthood" creates a crisis every 80 years, according to a theory prophesied in Neil Howe and William Strauss' "The Fourth Turning."

The authors wrote that the next crisis-era would start around 2005 and "climax" around 2020, and would involve millennials and boomers fighting over the shape of the world to come.

There are some similarities between recent events and the book's predictions: The 2008 financial crisis can be seen as the catalyst they mentioned, and in 2020 and early 2021, unrest has shaken the economy, politics, and the economy.

It's unclear whether the fourth turning as Howe and Strauss characterized it really is happening right now but the parallels are certainly eye-catching.

Not a wackadoodle conspiracy but draws comparisons to the Fourth turning theory and and events of the last few years & beyond.

12. It must be Thom Hartmann's too, cos I've heard him mention it several times

over the last decade and 1/2. So if Thom Hartmann likes the same book Steve Bannon likes, does that mean we hve to hate Thom Hartmann?

Guilt by association. Don't need THAT here....

2. As noted in the article, Steve Bannon is a big believer in this

and moved Trump to make moves to help make it happen

4. Brought about needlessly by the GOP

Most Republicans I've known over the years seem to relish the idea of a systemic collapse - in which they come out winning.

And naturally, they vote for presidents that help bring that about - or as close to it as they can, anyway.

Sick people.

18. The religious wackos have a different idea

They believe the Apocalypse of the Bible (as outlined in the Book of Revelations) should happen - the sooner the better. If there's anything they can do to speed it along, they're all for it. They believe Jesus their Lord will return to earth, probably in their lifetime.

So voting for Chump? Hell yeah! Make Chump the Supreme Leader? No problem!

26. That's definitely in the equation, sure.

They project their own aggressions not on on others - but on the world itself.

Exactly the type of people the GOPee tries to appeal to - with dire consequences for everyone else (but what do they care).

5. I must be psychic, I knew it was that book. I read it back in the day and

wondered how it would play out. Its very science based-not "prophecy" per se. It has to do with generational change, and same patterns occur in other cultures as well - not just "America.

Gotta say, its interesting that the rise of neo-facism happens exactly when the WW2 generation is all but gone.

9. Thanks for your input, It is an interesting theory, I first heard about it on a progressive talk

and some here seem to think the fascists own the theory.

Cyclical models of history seem to appeal to the human brain.

And I am not saying that they are all wrong, per se.

13. There's a lot of holes in the theory

In reality, there hasn't been a "turning" every 80 years, and his definition of turning is rather vague. You can always find a crisis to support your theory that the crisis is a turning point.

Still, we certainly are in the midst of a great crisis. Can't argue with that.

Boomers are rapidly losing numbers. It's just a question about how many others get ground up in the process.

25. Of course they will, eventually.

Because we Boomers will be largely dead. The other thing is the Boomer Presidents haven't exactly been stellar, unless you consider Obama a Boomer. I'm all for hoping the Millenial Presidents will be great.

17. I read a book back in '91 or 92 that gave the history...

of the American Christian Awakenings, and was predicting a ? Fourth Awaking that would (if I remember correctly) embrace even further liberal ideas in religious actions.

As a young second generation Catholic of a Slavic Church that used the shifting calendar of the Orthodox Church - while I knew we were a minority church so to speak, I had no idea back then that we Catholics were a relative minority in the USA until my 20's or so (I'd left the church when I was around 16).

So this history of American Christiandom was utterly fascinating, and eye opening to me.

Once I saw the publishing date on this one -
I knew it wasn't it.
And disapointed it wasn't. I might have to search for it
