Honestly, if the standard going forward, applied to all, was you can't be a Twitter troll and work

in the Cabinet, I might, could sign off on that. Honestly, I do see problems with the way Neera Tanden conducted herself. I would have problems hiring her to say teach in my school. But, that said, I don't think this will become a universal standard going forward. It certainly isn't one now given that Grenell got confirmed despite worse tweets. Instead I see this situation like the situation with Clinton's AG nominees.

Zoe Baird was his first nominee for AG. She had hired undocumented workers (when it was illegal for her to have done so) and didn't pay social security taxes on them (when she was required to have done so). She was forced to withdraw her nomination over that. Then there was Kimba Wood, his second choice, who had hired undocumented workers (when it was legal for her to have done so) and paid the required taxes, she had to withdraw as well. Then Janet Reno got the job. Good for her. Now, honestly, Baird was indefensible, she broke the law, she could have afforded to hire a PhD in child psych as her nanny and a crew to landscape her yard and not missed the money. Wood honestly was defensible in my opinion. But to this day, they are the only two who suffered this fate. Other appointees only had to pay back taxes. So it became a sexist double standard, plain and simple. I fear we will see this with Tanden as well. In point of fact, we are now hearing about another woman of color's tweets too. I have a problem with one rule for white males like me and a different rule for everyone else.

It may be personal with Manchin. In any case he might be wise to recuse himself. Ninga Feb 2021 #1
