There's a well-known anecdote about LBJ gathering with his top advisers in the White House after the address.

There were kudos aplenty, given what was almost unanimously viewed as a paradigm-shifting speech.

"How do you think the Dixiecrats took it?" one adviser asked.

"Well," LBJ began. "Have you ever been to my Texas ranch? I've got a prize bull there that I let loose on the cows every springtime."

"Now, the cows know he means business and - you should see'em! - they start quivering and quivering."

"Well, boys. We had'em quivering tonight!"

Gonna lift a chunk of the finish as our "quote of the week" that leads off our next Call to Action email:

“After long, dark years, one whole year there is light and hope of better days ahead if we all do our part. This country will be vaccinated soon. Our economy will be on the mend, our kids will be back in school.
This country can do anything, hard things, big things, important things. Over a year ago no one could have imagined what we were about to go through. But now we're coming through it. And it's a shared experience that binds us together as a nation. We are bound together by the loss and the pain of the days that have gone by. We're also bound together by the hope and the possibilities of the days in front of us. My fervent prayer for our country after all we've been through will come together as one people, one nation, one America. I believe we can and we will. We're seizing this moment, and history, I believe, will record, we faced and overcame one of the toughest and darkest periods in this nation's history. The darkest we've ever known. I promise you we'll come out stronger with a renewed faith in ourselves, a renewed commitment to one another, to our communities, and country."

As Rachel Maddow - AND many of us before her - have said:

"WHAT a difference a president makes!"

As I've said several times, I would have been happy with steady and competent. Even that would have been a giant improvement, and been seen by anyone with a pulse and room temperature IQ or better as a gigantic improvement.

He has blown past those tepid benchmarks so quickly and by so much that it's hard to imagine when he's going to stop accelerating and hit terminal velocity.

But I am convinced this week that Biden will quickly harness mankind's better angels and our interconnectedness with modern technology is part of that equation. The mood has so lifted in the country. Stores are abuzz. No company lacks manpower at least in the retailers I have visited. Joe's speeches will be studied for generations. He is speaking softly, slowly, targeted our minds and hearts. It's like he's speaking to the collective unconscious, to our very souls. It may soften a lot of anger.

Just, plain decency. Now we have it back.

Courage. Humility. Honor.

You have earned my respect in every one of those categories. Thank you, Mr. President.
