Stop the filibusterer and pass the voting bill. Otherwise we will never win in Georgia again.

(33,643 posts)The auspices here is that people are 'bribing' voters by giving them free shit for showing up to vote.

(63,221 posts)Are they going to prevent you from bringing your own snacks and water with you as well? I always carry a big bottle of water with me in my bag. I can't go very long without having something to drink. My mouth and throat get too dried out.

(33,643 posts)So yes you can bring your own.
You just can't share, you see?
Not sure if you can give your child a bottle of water if they're there with you, though.
Typical RePuQ f***ing idiotic bullshit, IOW.

(82,849 posts)Mostly in service to enabling bigots to practice their prejudices under the aegis of "deeply held religious beliefs." They're also big into the nullification of laws, regulations and ordinances they don't like (e.g., supporting county sheriffs who refuse to enforce laws they don't like).
May I humbly suggest Matthew 25 : 31-46. Someone could easily make the claim that they don't want to be liable to eternal punishment for refusing to give the thirsty something to drink. It would be interesting to see conservatives twist themselves into exegetical pretzels trying to explain that the plain language of the story doesn't mean what it says.

(34,119 posts)I bet there is nothing in the bill about selling water at a loss.
Make sure whoever goes out has the proper permitting and does not carry anything that could be considered political in nature so the RepuQs have nothing to complain about on that score.
I suggested Scouts so there would be kids doing it, but any one could do it, I'd bet.

(17,138 posts)It's illegal to give water to people in voting line in Georgia now. this crap law will be litigated and Georgia will lose.
Stupid republicans. They are monsters. Stop the filibusterer and pass the voting bill.

(54,770 posts)Not sure what final bill says, but earlier version was: No person shall solicit votes in any manner or by any means or method, nor shall any person distribute or display any campaign material, nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector.
While it could be abused, I doubt taking your grandmother a bottle of water is going to be a problem.
Earlier versions of Bill required counties to ensure voter waits were minimized. Not sure where that stands.

(4,726 posts)See all those "nor"s in your quote? They separate each of the individual prohibited actions in the bill, with no connection; it's basically a shorter way of saying "and also shall not". Let's put some line breaks in and see how it clears things up:
No person shall:
Solict votes
Nor
Display campaign material
Nor
Provide "gifts", food/drink.
It's illegal in Georgia to give Grandma a bottle of water, full stop. Now, if it would be prosecuted is a different question, but the law is clear.

(33,643 posts)I believe it's actually about offering anything of value to 'entice people to vote'.
The 'water in line' ban is just a part of it that people are focusing on as particularly egregious, but I'm fairly sure you could also be accused of it if you were doing it on the parking lot at the voting place as well.
Could be wrong, but ...
ecstatic
(32,566 posts)thing Congress can do right now. This is one area where I'm not willing to compromise. 40 states are actively trying to turn back the clock with regard to voting rights. This is outrageous and cannot be allowed to continue.
That said, none of these ridiculous changes would stop me or others from voting. The danger here is not necessarily what the QOP is doing but how Democrats respond to it. I need to know that I'm voting for people who are doing everything in their power to uphold my right to vote. If they can't or won't do that, then it sends a message that my vote isn't really needed.
I really liked what Biden said about it today and I'm hopeful that they will take action soon.
