The Republican-controlled Kentucky legislature overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and changed the way the state picks replacements for U.S. senators who leave office before their term is up.
If McConnell leaves office early, the seat will now stay in GOP hands.

(26,695 posts)They have to control the state legislature in order to make changes to the law.
But I doubt that it matters much. This is all about avoiding losing the US Senate if McConnell decides to retire soon.
What will look particularly politically craven will be the next time a Democrat wins a senate seat in KY and they have a Republican governor.

(26,695 posts)It has to be a deep red state that somehow ends up with a Democratic governor and a US senator who wants an administration job or plans to retire.
Most deep red states have Republican governors.
