Kentucky's GOP legislature overrode Beshear's veto on how to replace U.S. Senators

The Republican-controlled Kentucky legislature overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and changed the way the state picks replacements for U.S. senators who leave office before their term is up.

If McConnell leaves office early, the seat will now stay in GOP hands.

They got the minimum votes necessary in the House to do so.

Really disheartening day for education in Kentucky.

We've done the same thing in solidly blue states that somehow end up with a red governor.

At least... that's part of this law.

He has 21 days (assuming the vacancy occurs most than a certain period before the next election)

It’s weird in fact. Happens a lot in red and blue states.

They have to control the state legislature in order to make changes to the law.

But I doubt that it matters much. This is all about avoiding losing the US Senate if McConnell decides to retire soon.

What will look particularly politically craven will be the next time a Democrat wins a senate seat in KY and they have a Republican governor.

It has to be a deep red state that somehow ends up with a Democratic governor and a US senator who wants an administration job or plans to retire.

Most deep red states have Republican governors.
