Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has emerged as the staunchest Democratic defender of the filibuster, brushing off fire from the outspoken progressive wing of her party as she tries to stake out a bipartisan reputation in a battleground state, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Said Sinema: When you have a place thats broken and not working, and many would say thats the Senate today, I dont think the solution is to erode the rules. I think the solution is for senators to change their behavior and begin to work together, which is what the country wants us to do.

(15,367 posts)Do you just shrug and chalk it up to partisan gridlock, or do you change the rules to GET SHIT DONE, which is what VOTERS elected you to do.
If Sinema continues to cling to the filibuster, shes going to have an interesting summer, as vaccinated constituents hit the streets to let her know how they feel about Senate traditions...

(18,745 posts)Let Sinema be involved in "working" with Republicans to craft a piece of legislation, let her champion the bill, let her work really hard to write it and get GOP buy in, then watch as the Republicans all refuse to support it. The GOP refuses to work on anything, they will not vote for anything, even if you let them write it 100% themselves.
But I suspect she already knows this, and just is saying what she thinks her voters want to hear.

(21,424 posts)Shes right that the public wants politicians to work together but shes naive to believe it will happen. Even if you let the rethugs write the bills they wont vote them.
If there is compromise that will show leadership from Biden and the Dens and the rethugs know if the people see leadership, Biden will get re-elected.
So she can try as much as she wants to koom-bye-ya my lord and they will smile and tell her, yeah well work with you! But they will stab her and America In the back in the end.

(2,034 posts)Give the voters a choice between Republican and Republican Lite and the Republican wins almost every time!
She could easily get burned doing this and we lose a Democratic seat.

(1,004 posts)used it during the 2017-19 Congress? Seriously.
Change the rules back to a talking filibuster and straight up abuse the budget reconciliation process (same as Republicans did) to get legislation to pass. We already got a huge win from the parliamentarian yesterday for the infrastructure bill.
But if you kill the filibuster, don't complain when a Republican Congress starts passing the most batshit crazy crap you've ever seen starting as early as 2025.

(32,987 posts)But that's usually the choice we're presented with.
The filibuster can be CHANGED rather than eliminated. Reid changed it, McConnell changed it.
Sinema and Manchin are being disingenuous, which is normal for Senators. But more normal for GOP Senators.

(52,130 posts)at least Biden apparently doesn't actually believe this nonsense despite his having said he did during the campaign. I do hope she comes around on this as she currently seems to have bought this hook, line and sinker.

(7,077 posts)She might as well have said, "the solution is for a fucking miracle to happen." Hey Senator Dumbass, the Republicans will simply NOT support anything which could be seen as a victory for Biden, ESPECIALLY if it will actually be effective.
Her answer is either disingenuous or naive... or both.

(95,237 posts)The rules, this one in particular, are the problem, and exactly why the institution neither functions nor is able to function.
You can't repair the Senate without changing the rules to allow it to function.
The country does not give the south end of a northbound rat whether Senators work together. The country wants legislation three quarters of the populace supports to be passed and signed into law. No one much cares how it's done, not outside the beltway press.
