Republicans and conservative groups made inroads via YouTube in 2020 with low-information Latino voters often ignored by Democrats, a deep new analysis of U.S. voters shows.

Why it matters: The percentage of eligible Latino voters is expected to increase in every election, but traditional media isn't necessarily where these new voters are going for crucial information shaping their decisions.

The details: Preliminary findings by research firm Equis, reviewed by Axios, found that YouTube played a major role in convincing Latino voters to support Trump in higher percentages than expected.

The research found that 64% of registered Latino voters — and 74% of Hispanic voters in Florida — got election information from YouTube.

I could speculate on who but that would be speculation.

I don’t know a single Latino in my life who likes or uses it. A small group of activists came up with it, then credulous white people disseminated it.

It’s patronizing as hell.

But, you know, gotta do that signaling.

It’s seen as an assault on their language and culture. Journalists need to stop hanging on Twitter all day and using it as their cultural cues.

People who try to force LatinX are basically declaring they don’t actually hang out with any Latinos.

Some Latinos are just right wing leaning. It isn't really about messaging or reaching out.

But Covid was the biggest reason for what hurt among those who would consider voting democratic.

Someone from Florida had been posting how a significant number of Latinos will usually just vote for the incumbent. And the best way to reach these people are usually ground campaigns and direct contact.

Trump putting his name to things like stimulus checks and food boxes also helped him.
