McCarthy skirts questions about phone call with Trump amid riot

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., skirted questions during an interview on Sunday about his Jan. 6 phone call with then-President Donald Trump as the Capitol riot was ongoing.

Speaking with "Fox News Sunday," McCarthy said Trump was not aware of what was going on at the Capitol when he first reached him. A former Trump adviser told The Washington Post that the former president was watching the events unfold on TV, an account which Trump later denied.

"I was the first person to contact him when the riots were going on," McCarthy said. "He didn't see it. What he ended the call with saying was telling me he'll put something out to make sure to stop this. And that's what he did. He put a video out later."

As host Chris Wallace responded, that video Trump posted was "quite a lot later" and "was a pretty weak video." In that video, which was posted hours after the riot began, Trump urged the rioters to "Go home. We love you. You're very special."

After the weak video of love and kisses for insurrectionists, The former guy whined that he shouldn't have made it, shouldn't have put it out.

I think the congressmen's and senators own words in the immediate aftermath of the violent insurrection should be played over, and over, and over, and over. Judges are seeing additional video of violence from the failed coup, and this needs to be front and center. All 143 Reps and the dozen senators who called to stop the certification are complicit. They did it to buy time for the mob to storm the Capitol.

This is bigger than 9/11. Our very own Talibangelican Republican Hatriots made the Capitol look like the Iranian Embassy, circa 1979/80. Those who participated must be indicted and tried for seditious conspiracy. They're all over facebook--proud of the plan.
Let them be proud in front of judges. The former guy laid out this plan in his 2017 inaugural address--he promised American Carnage, and delivered. In June 2020, he said it would be rigged.

The Right is already overusing insurrection to weaken the impact of the word, just like they did with impeachment and Bill Clinton. The cheapen everything so we can't use the same tools. Franken resigned, and Gaetz is still fundraising. The double standard is breathtaking.
