How big of a deal was the January 6th Insurrection?

Last edited Sun May 2, 2021, 08:44 AM - Edit history (1)

Republicans, especially Trumpsters, would have us believe it was not a "big deal" at all. It was just a peaceful "protest" that got out of hand.

They were just angry because their Leader lost the presidency to Joe Biden. It was just their way of letting off steam. In reality, they were honest, patriotic Americans.

That is what they want you to believe.

But, the reality is that people feared for their lives. Some people died. They were an out-of-control mob, who used anything and everything they could get their hands on to smash and destroy and injure others.

Most of them led comfortable lives and had very little to actually complain about. But, they were weak-minded and susceptible to the propaganda of a cult leader. They were ready to give up their lives for their freedom to be morons.

It has become obvious that they cannot accept responsibility for their crimes. They would prefer that everything be dismissed. (In fact, they would prefer that Trump come back to the White House and give them all a pardon)

The sooner they understand that America is not going to forget January 6th, and they are not going to be able to spin it on FOX or anywhere else, the better it will be for all.

3. They wanted to overthrow an election, arrest and hang those who disagreed.

Which makes it treason.

13. Not limited to just overthrowing an election,...

... the design, intent, and purpose was to overthrow a fairly and legally elected government,.. nullify that government by force,... and then install their unelected leader and his brand of government of their preference and choice.

This was a COUP D'ETAT, the kind more commonly seen in third world banana republics.

This was done to nullify the electoral results of a functional democracy because they preferred a more Fascistic result.

Nazis can not be allowed to by force to be permitted to make democracy be restricted only to seats in the back of the bus while fascists hijack the very same bus and proceed to drive it at full speed off the nearest cliff.

Fully functional democracies have safeguards to stop rampant fascism and their fevered dreams of political supremacy. We at our own peril green light their intent to trash democracy if severe consequences are not imposed against them for attempts to take over and trash a fairly elected government by mob threats, mayhem, chaos, and force.

5. It was worse than 9/11...

And it won't be forgotten by the vast majority of sane people.

6. It was as bad as it looked on tv, as bad as the pictures looked in the papers and online posts

It was as bad as it gets for our country. 9/11 was horrific as the loss of life was so high, but it was an attack from an external force and one that we could unite around as it was an attack on all of us.

It was a big deal, 1/6 was worse as it was an attack by some of US against all of us. It was an attack on our democracy by those who live in it and are protected by its freedoms. It was an attack by our friends and neighbors, and worse condoned by others of our friends and neighbors.

After 9/11 there was national unity calling out the inhumanity of the attack, some, me included think that the response was botched, but, there was still a rally around the flag and a national time of mourning and wanting to help those most impacted by the attack. After 1/6, many of those who suffered most of the physical damage were further attacked by both sides, one saying the deserved it and the other saying they were a part of it. The following days were even worse with suicides being questioned, long hours worked trying to secure the building while investigations (clearly necessary) were ongoing.

Ron Johnson was not out selling the “ these were happy Muslims out for a flight until the US attacked them so they flew their planes into buildings bullshit he is using about 1/6. Members of Congress whose lives were protected were then gaslighting the very people who bore the brunt of the attack. The West Front of the Capitol was like a scene from Game of Thrones, yet this is America, The WORLDS EXAMPLE of DEMOCRACY...what the Fuck!!!

I am so disheartened when I hear people say, “they got what they deserved” or “what did they think would happen”. We had an election, a lot of people came out to vote, it has happened since the 1700’s, until Trump there was never an armed assault against the Capitol. He called his shot years ago and then put his plan into action.

It was a big deal, people died, people were physically injured, people were emotionally scarred, people’s lives were changed, our nations perception around the world was changed too.

It was a big deal, people with explosive devices, Spears, bats, clubs, chemical sprays, flag poles, rocks, bricks, hockey and lacrosse sticks, improvised weapons of all types clad in military, paramilitary and even sporting good gear attacked the US Capitol. Young staff members, cafeteria workers, cleaning crews, and yes members of the House and Senate were barricaded in rooms wondering about the fate of our democracy.

It was a big deal. It still is a big deal. People are still impacted by it daily. The physical damage to the building is still not completely repaired, the emotional damage to the Members and staff and their families are not repaired. The building will be repaired long before the people are.

It was a big deal

8. It was a well planned, poorly executed attack...

against our nation.

The plan was to use the crowds as cover. Trump and the other speakers at the "rally" were charged with inciting them to march to the capitol. Once there, agents provocateur embedded in the crowd along with certain Capitol police moved them inside where the actual insurrectionist agents began the mission. The "oathkeepers" and "3 percenters" were foiled by loyal Capitol police. The woman who was shot and killed was in the act of breaching a space where congress members were still being evacuated.

This could have ended very differently and we could very will be living under a totalitarian regime right now.

Anyone involved with any phase of this attack should be brought to justice. This includes people like Ginni Thomas, (wife of SCOTUS justice Clarence Thomas,) who bankrolled busses to transport people to the "rally." The list of coconspirators is long and contains many well known actors. They should all be held accountable for this attempted treason.

I could go on but you get the idea.

11. "use the crowds as cover."

Now we all know haw far identification technology has advanced.

Cell phones tracked each of them from the WH to the Capitol and even inside the capitol.

Didn't count on friends and relatives turning them in to the FBI.

Wore clothing that helped to identify them and their employer.

This is my guess:
The cell phone number lead to a name and address.
Name and address lead to a drivers license and photo.
Start computer matching to remaining unidentified people.

12. Largely discombobulated mob of disorderly discontents with a scattering of determined delusionals

That's my best one-line characterization.

15. There's no other event in American history that's remotely similar to it.

Ten years ago, the idea of the POTUS inciting an angry mob to attack the Capitol and attempt to murder the Vice President and the Speaker of the House would have been in the script of some crappy movie.

In 2021, reality became stranger than fiction.
