This is the first SARS pandemic in modern human history.

We are winging this as we go...

I feel this was brought on with political motivation.

And has rewarded the maskholes and antivaxxers

4. Maybe because they are the scientists and researchers

Do you honestly think they would make this recommendation if they were not confident it was the best thing to do?
After more of a year of “follow the science “ I am shocked at the internet warriors that think they more than said scientists.

It will not influence people to get a vax.

16. You are free to continue to wear your mask and socially distance yourself.

The CDC is not telling you to not do this. The govt. cannot mandate that you wear a mask if they don't have the data to support the mandate.

13. I don't see anybody arguing with the science here

The problem is the gap between the science and effective public health policy.

Getting vaccinations has always been on the honor system, and that creates a problem science can't solve.

vaccinations are mandatory for many schools, they were mandatory for travel (smallpox vaccine, for example, until the 1980s.)

20. if you are vaccinated, and there are no regulations

concerning mask wearing that apply, you can either wear a mask, or not wear a mask.

The CDC is not in the regulation business. They are providing guidance for individuals who are vaccinated about what behaviors are risky with respect to covid.

22. So the CDC is not in the regulation business...

I guess that falls on government?

So do we agree there is a gap there?

I also asserted that getting vaccinations was on the honor system. Which it was.

So which part was I "wrong" about?

24. yeah sure, the US is a mess of nominally independent states doing their own thing.

But if you are vaccinated, you are safe. The risk is negligible.

As I noted elsewhere here, we are not going to get to herd immunity. The nazi shitheads turned this into a political litmus test, so they aren't getting vaccinated.

No herd immunity, covid is not going away. Get vaccinated, go back to normal.

7. Wondered the same thing

NEWS FLASH: You don't need a mask if you are vaccinated according to the CDC!!

Unless there is a mandate in or at your state/city/town/store/employer.

Which is everywhere you want to go.

And since there is no effective way to screen, the blanket mask mandates stay in effect.

Now we return to your regularly scheduled program.

and where a mask will face maskholes and people mad at them as they will think they haven’t gotten the shot.

11. People cross state borders

People cross borders all the time, for work and pleasure and everything else. These artificial boundaries relative to any type of herd immunity are somewhat meaningless.

14. Doesn't That Put The Burden On Those...

...that followed the recommendation and got vaxxed?
So, 3 in 10 hold out RWNJs mean I never get to go anywhere without a mask?
That seems to hold me hostage for the foolish actions of others.
I can only control what I do. I got the shots. And, if they say we need boosters, I'll do that.
But, I would resent a standard being set which I, and the CDC, cannot control.
If some idiots refuse to get the vax, to heck with them.
And, moving forward as if being vaxxed is not sufficient seems less prudence than paralysis.

The risk is on the individual to manage. It's no longer the state's job to manage that risk for everyone.

42. Totally Agree

Which is why I don't like the 70% threshold idea.
And like I said, there is a risk in situations like this to allow caution to become paralyzing fear.
I don't see how fear to that degree is productive, to the person or to society.

23. Oh so you weren't suggesting that the CDC should provide state guidance.

OK, fair enough.

The vaccination rate is not going to hit 70%, we know that now. There is no point in waiting for herd immunity. Thanks to Trump and his party of misguided nazi idiots, getting vaccinated is for liberals and commies only.

So, there are going to be two sets of people:

1. idiots who won't get vaccinated and don't give a damn about masks and social distancing.
2. people who are vaccinated.

The people in group 2 can stop trying to protect the people in group 1. We can go back to normal, although we need to pay attention to developments, and we can do so without serious risk. The people in group 1 can, quite frankly, go fuck themselves, which is exactly what they are doing.

26. They have fucked up consistently since this thing started.

First saying, "Just wash your hands and everything will be fine."

Issuing crap guidance on testing of asymptomatic people, then reversing it.

Then touting hydrochloroquinine under pressure from Donny Bodybags in the absence of any clinical trials. Then reversing it, but not before people died from taking hydrochloroquinine.

Reversing itself multiple times on how the virus is transmitted.

Putting out a statement that vaccinated people were no longer contagious, then reversing that, then reversing the reversal.

Seriously, they are useless. And they have killed people with their uselessness.

27. It is just not making common sense to me.

Last year I remember yelling at my sister to wear a mask at her salon.

She yelled back saying the cdc said it wasn’t necessary. I said if medical people need one you do to.

I mean for Chris sakes she was inches away from people face to face.

Finally got it through her head. Don’t get me wrong she was trying to do right. But damn we need some common sense.

28. Yes. The total lack of common sense coming out of the agency that we depend on

to CONTROL DISEASES!!! It's ridiculous. I don't listen to them anymore. They'll just come out in a few weeks and tell us the opposite, but not till there is a spike in cases from this nonsense.

I am watching the Times. They have a county by county tally of new cases. When my county goes into the low single digits of new cases per day, I'll consider putting the mask aside. I don't wear it in restaurants now, but I still wear it inside public spaces and walking around my somewhat crowded town.

Businesses are upset with this.

They are like what are we the vaccine police now?

At least when everyone needed a mask it was same for all and more safe for all. And more easily enforced.

34. I've long been skeptical about the CDC. I know it's not popular to say this here, but the

but the flu numbers they publish just never added up for me, and then I read this:
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/comparing-covid-19-deaths-to-flu-deaths-is-like-comparing-apples-to-oranges/

They kind of pull the number out of their butts, and it has nothing to do with reality, and those numbers have amounted to a scare campaign for years.

I'm in no way anti-vax, but I don't often get flu shots.

37. CDC.

"On Feb. 6, a scientist in a small infectious disease lab on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus in Atlanta was putting a coronavirus test kit through its final paces. The lab designed and built the diagnostic test in record time, and the little vials that contained necessary reagents to identify the virus were boxed up and ready to go. But NPR has learned the results of that final quality control test suggested something troubling — it said the kit could fail 33% of the time."

Because they don't feel the science backs up that policy.

Funny that so many who have been so vocal about following CDC guidance up until this point are now question their decision making. The Biden CDC has the health of the country in mind when making every decision, I have no doubt about that.
