My daughter lives there.
She's researching window brands and models. Smallish apartment/basically studio.
But after talking last night with her I imagine everyone else wants one too.

(9,895 posts)I also am a huge supporter of using ice packs (or simple plastic bags of crushed ice or ice cubes) on the chest and over the kidneys with or without forced air recirculation. It can help you feel cooler, but people still need to be cautious of heat stroke regardless of how they feel.
I wish her luck, that is inhuman temperatures for anyone to endure.

(18,497 posts)She would have been lugging bags in that heat.
She's doing various things now. And waiting for the money she put into her pension to be released.

(32,992 posts)It's cool & cloudy today - temp is barely 70. It's likely we won't need AC for another decade.

(18,497 posts)Find a place that would ship for free.
Or ship to store at least.

(36,186 posts)But demand might be up. I havent checked. But maybe look into that. Also the non chain hardware stores might have them while Walmart etc may be out of stock.

I do wonder about availability and demand.

however, the fans disappear from all stores. She could check the Costco warehouse online & see what they have. Of course, these are not AC units, but they do help. Some people swear by putting a pan of ice in front a fan, to cool and humidify the air.
My locality is currently okay (as in this week, so far) but I am actively dreading the next many months, not only because we personally have no air conditioning, but we are well into the fire zone. If it gets above about 105, I will have to leave the house.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.

(18,497 posts)In a high humidity area a "swamp cooler" just makes it even more like breathing under water.

(2,074 posts)Might be best to order from Amazon or another online retailer. A small window unit should not be too pricey.

(23,820 posts)...to keep in a large ice chest than not have air conditioning. I am a heat and humidity wimp.
alphafemale
(18,497 posts)Exactly. Stores are open every day with their food.
I need to sleep every night.
Even if you just isolated off your bedroom.

(15,784 posts)Kept two or three 2-liter bottles of water in the freezer. When the heat hit, I'd put one in a dishpan and set it in front of a fan; learned pretty quickly to put a second pan or cookie sheet under the dishpan to catch the condensation drips. Wasn't pretty, but it definitely helped. Maybe your daughter could try it until she can get an AC unit.
My family in Seattle and on the Olympic Peninsula are not pleased with the heat. My sister says they usually refer to this time of year as "Junuary".
