PHOENIX — Arizona’s largest hospital system announced Tuesday that all employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Nov. 1.

Banner Health President and CEO Peter Fine said the decision was made “to reduce risk for our patients, their families, visitors and each other.”

“Safety is an absolute top priority and the COVID vaccine mandate reflects that commitment,” Fine said in a press release. “The vaccine data has fully supported the safety and efficacy to prevent disease and reduce its severity.

Banner Health expands its COVID-19 employee vaccination program
To protect Banner patients and one another, employees will be required to be vaccinated by November 1

“We care for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and we owe it to them to take every measure possible to ensure the safest care environment,” said Peter Fine, president and CEO for Banner Health, in a company-wide email on July 20. “… we are taking this step to reduce risk for our patients, their families, visitors and each other. Safety is an absolute top priority and the COVID vaccine mandate reflects that commitment. The vaccine data has fully supported the safety and efficacy to prevent disease and reduce its severity. There is overwhelming evidence for us to act on behalf of the communities that rely on us to care for and protect them.”

Banner Health is implementing this requirement for several reasons, including the rise of the Delta variant, the pending lift of the Emergency Use Authorization by the Food and Drug Administration, the need to protect its patients and workforce, and to prepare for the flu season. In addition, national data shows that 97 percent of hospitalizations and 99 percent of COVID-19 deaths are in the unvaccinated.

Headquartered in Arizona, Banner Health is one of the largest, secular nonprofit health care systems in the country. The system owns and operates 30 acute-care hospitals, Banner Health Network, Banner – University Medicine, academic and employed physician groups, long-term care centers, outpatient surgery centers and an array of other services; including Banner Urgent Care, family clinics, home care and hospice services, pharmacies and a nursing registry. Banner Health is in six states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Wyoming. For more information, visit www.BannerHealth.com.

they totally are allowed to ask health providers for any employee's vaccination records and to require vaccination as a condition of continued employment.

The dumbest Americans are finding this out the hard way.

Anti-vax healthcare workers are a big liability risk for lawsuits if a cancer patient or something similar catches COVID from them while their immune system is weakened from treatment.

HIPPA vs HIPA vs HIPPO.

Seems like they would have added the correct spelling to their word processing (Word Perfect?) dictionaries and treated the warnings as something to pay attention to?

Then again, if you've been involved with the tedium of healthcare data entry, transcribing, etc., perhaps not.

there are so many acronyms in this field that a person who pays attention to detail would go into MS Office and edit the spellcheck dictionaries. It's way too easy to miss when in a crunch, or just lazy.

During the Iraq war years ago, a British intern at GCHQ spellchecked an American intelligence document using the British spelling dictionary and created all sorts of havoc.

"Gentlemen, our M.P. saw the P.M. this A.M. and the P.M. wants more L.S.D. from the P.I.B. by tomorrow A.M. or P.M. at the latest. I told the P.M.'s P.P.S. that A.M. was N.B.G. so tomorrow P.M. it is for the P.M., nem. con. ...Give us a (cigarette) or I'll go spare."

Oh my god I had to look so much of that up.

Every time I hear about a health care organization requiring its employees to get vaccinated, I want to stand up and cheer. I wish all of them would hurry up and get on the vaccination bandwagon. It's taking way too long.

I really wish ALL employers would start requiring this, but ESPECIALLY those in the care field.
