What happened to Marco Rubio, Time mag's 'Republican Savior' of 2013?

When Time magazine's Feb.18, 2013 cover featured then-41-year-old Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the declarative headline read: "The Republican Savior: How Marco Rubio became the new voice of the GOP."

--------------

Fast forward eight years to last week's Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, in which Rubio's "new voice" and "Republican Savior" monikers have not aged well. At age 50, he languishes at the bottom of his party's 2024 presidential prospects list - supported by just 3 percent of Republican voters.

So, what happened to Marco Rubio, the GOP's "new leader for the next generation"?

-----------

As we head into the 2022 election cycle, Rubio has carved out a lane of national and Senate respectability. But the early momentum from his 2013 glory days is lost because the Republican Party and Tea Party wing that first elected him in 2010 has radically changed. Rubio belongs to the Trumplican Party now but is not considered a true MAGA-hat-wearing believer.

Politically speaking, the two-term senator is smothered by Gov. DeSantis, who is smothered by former President Trump. Loyalty to Trump is the only standard that seems to matter. And Trumplicans, especially those in Florida, know the difference between true believers and those who pretend because they have no choice.

Apparently quoting bible verses you have never read and don’t understand and posing as a hipster isn’t doing the trick for Little Marco.

they WANT the GOP to be wonderful, so you see the cycling though the flavor of the day to try to make one of them into the next Reagen.

And, he was eager to glam on to it, but is an intellectual lightweight AND has no core to build from. Just a pathetic politician, as you note weakly putting bus finger to the wind and trying to stay relevant.

"Weak and phony" and can be anything he thinks people want, but he isn't very good at any persona he adopts. His ambition overrides any character he might have had at one time, though I seriously doubt he ever had any.

and Rubio just could not recover. There clearly is no there there, he is just a 25 second talking point.

As a side note, Trump looks so awkward and out of place on that stage like he has no idea what anyone is talking about. At that point, I couldn't imagine him as President of the United States.

that IS popular right now. Waiting. The 'faithful' cannot stand anybody, including their own stench. And the best among them poll somewhere in the 20s on the national stage.

That says it. It takes a while for Republican voters to catch the stank arising from their favorite Republican grifters and liars.

But eventually some of them get a snootful of who they are actually in bed with.
