Arizona voters baffled by Kyrsten Sinema: 'she betrayed us'

Allie Young believed in Kyrsten Sinema. Her vote helped elect the seemingly progressive Democrat from Arizona to the Senate in 2018. But she wonders what happened to Sinema when she got to Washington.

Young, a voting rights activist and citizen of the Diné, or Navajo Nation, is appalled by Sinema’s refusal to reform or abolish the filibuster.

“She has betrayed her constituents,” Young, 31, said by phone this week. “The sort of inaction that she’s taking right now is an action and it’s making the BIPOC community, especially in Arizona, distrust her more and more as the days go by.”
snip---
“Her campaign was something that attracted us because back then she seemed to be a little more progressive than she is now. That’s the part that we’re all having trouble understanding. What happened?”

1. Sinema got caught up in the aura of power.

The title of Senator before her name makes her feel as though she does not have to be made to be accountable to the people. The people are noticing. Nor do they like it when she avoids them.

24. Don't forget the money...

US Senators and Representatives start out at $174,000 salary. And the ones with a "title" make even more. That puts them in the top 10% wage rank...which in itself, is significant motivation to run for elected office, seek re-election to stay in office and explains why they never consider term limits, put 'self over country' and become career politicians.

We end up with a bunch of faux elitists, who start thinking they're worth $175K a year, running the country, mostly concerned with the next election cycle.

And picture the MTG, Gaetz, Gomert, Jordan, McCarthy, McConnell, Nunes types looking for a job in the private sector. Who the hell would hire 'em, for any amount of salary?

37. She probably sold her constituents down the river

To illustrate how lucrative a job in congress can be, Republican Rick Lazio, the infamous last and deciding vote in Bill Clinton’s impeachment, was rewarded with high paying Wall Street jobs when he left office. For example, in 2009 he made over $1,500,000.

Nice work, if you can get it.

It’s implausible that she’d do such a drastic about face so quickly.

5. I spoke with my friend in Phoenix

she and her mom voted for Sinema not because they liked or trusted her that much. It was more of a vote against McSally who they detested.

They happily voted FOR Mark Kelly, and believe it was his candidacy that won the state for Biden.

9. It's hard being a Democratic party in a red or leaning-red state.

It makes the choosing of candidates both more important and more difficult. When the necessary, ultimate and primary goal is to defeat the Republican candidate some things get confused. Funding, name recognition, communication skills, etc. - all these things are integral to the task.

Through that lens, Sinema was a godsend to Arizona Democrats because otherwise McSally would be GOP senator #51. That was hard to even think, much less type out loud.

7. It's become obvious that sinema is an opportunist

She ran on being a progressive at at time when that was to her advantage. Then she switched to where the money is and again that was to her advantage. She cares not about her constituents. She is only in this for the narcissism, money and the power.

She is a sociopath

She cashed in with the right wing donor class. Arizona got totally taken. Seems like she got enough that she can leave with no qualms, she knows the people hate this but it's all about her pocketbook now & nothing about the state or the working class/poor.

20. After a Republican appointed Justice switched sides...

…I have always wondered what would happen if someone had the fortitude to lie and be on the opposing side just to get to a place where they can switch sides and do some real damage.

Maybe right now there is an individual working their way to a chance to be high in government, but they are on the side they are against; waiting for their moment to turncoat and cast that deciding vote.

29. Keep in mind...

…that to pull something like that off, as in an intentional desire to switch sides years down the road, you have to be a highly functioning sociopath with structure and control.

If you want more guns, you’d have to get elected on gun control and work your way up to an F NRA ranking, then do the rope-a-dope. Or pick any issue. Not just any fuck with a grudge and the idea can do that.

It can only apply to state officials. There is no mechanism to recall Federal officials as there's nothing in the US Constitution for it. Even if they tried it on her, she'd win a lawsuit to kill it.

39. what happened is she wanted to get rich, so she told Arizona whatever it wanted to hear

in the anti-drumpf environment, to get elected. Now she has her wish, lining her pockets with donor money to make sure she takes McConnell's side in squelching the Democrats agenda. it is a damn shame there is no recall system in place for a Senator.
