(15,246 posts)Don't have it, but wished I did when my pet needed emergency treatment. You don't need it for routine vet visits or procedures, but if you're concerned about specialty care, it'd be worth checking out.

Started trying to help my daughter look into them yesterday. I told her she is pretty much out of luck.
Her dog is a Mastiff mix 3 yrs old. already has a preexisting condition (Cruciate ligament injury) so from what I can tell most will not only not cover that but won't cover it if it happens on the opposite side. As apparently that is very common.
She is a minimum wage earner. luckily at at vets office so will probably get a discount for the needed surgery but it still will probably will cost her several thousand dollars.
I did find a couple for her to check and see if they may work.
I also did find her a discount program not an insurance that may work and good rx will work for the dogs meds. But was wondering if anything was better than what I was able to find.
Or if any one had any experience saying one was awesome or worthless.

(10,553 posts)We use to have it cover everything but now only do accidents. Its worth it. One of our dogs broke her back and we were given the following options from the VCA:
1) put her down
2) use wheels the rest of her life
3) surgery, 8-12k out of pocket
Insurance paid 4k towards the surgery.

But for illness or injury it covers 80%, after a $250 deductible.

(10,811 posts)I was somewhat miffed that they refused to pay for a continuing ear/yeast infection when our pooch was a puppy. They insisted it was a pre-existing condition. But . . . when she was diagnosed with kidney problems requiring multiple blood work-ups, urine tests and an ultrasound at a nearby vet hospital, they picked up 90% of the bill after our $350 annual deductible.
We've used pet insurance for the last three dogs. Just in case. Because veteranary fees are really high anymore and every pet owner I know wants to provide the best healthcare they can for their furry family members. You get into chronic illnesses, surgeries or cancer treatment, the bills can go through the roof.
The policy is for the dog as well as insurance for our bank account.
