Stuart Stevens tweet re: Mike Pence

stuart stevens
@stuartpstevens
Mike Pence was surrounded by a conspiracy to end democracy in America. He didn’t call the FBI. He didn’t alert the public. He waited to see if it would succeed. When it was clear it would fail, at the last minute he threw in with the winning side.

but not sure that's accurate. Pence was the key to the entire scheme. It doesn't work without him. So not sure how he waited, he pretty clearly actively did not allow it to happen.

Now, if you want to argue he should have been vocal about it from the start, sure, he didn't want to take that heat and probably hoped it would melt away.

he did the bare minimum he needed to do, and yeah I am guessing he did a sanity check with Quayle which shouldn't have even been needed.

But I just don't think it's fair to say he waited to see if it would work, it didn't work without him.

Excerpts from the book “Peril” include revelations about Pence being less resolute than previously portrayed in refusing to overturn election certification and how Quayle helped to stiffen Pence’s backbone, telling him to do the right thing in a phone conversation prior to Jan. 6.
...

Here’s the account of that pivotal call:

Pence was asking repeatedly if there was some way to follow Trump’s demand to throw out election results.

“Mike, you have no flexibility on this,” Quayle told him. “None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away.”

Pence pleaded that Quayle didn’t know the position he was in, with pressure from Trump.

He clearly wavered, but at the end of the day, he didn't go through with it and again he was the key, it doesn't happen without him.

I was still writing my "Pence is no hero" post when you posted you weren't suggesting he was a hero. As soon as I hit post & saw what you had just said, I kinda thought it sounded like I was hammering the hero thing. Wasn't intentional, I swear.

All he's come out with was a technicality that Trump was wrong about what Pence could have done.
He skirts the much bigger issue - the big lie and Trump's attempt to steal the Oval Office.

He sat there for four years and helped enable Trump.

Sorry, no forgiveness here. No hand clap. Things like disdain, repugnance & outrage prevail. Pence is a traitor.
Pence was derelict of his duty to uphold and defend the Constitution throughout Trump's term.

Pence is not much better than the rest of those who tried to steal democracy from Americans and are still working at making another attempt.
