MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexico has acknowledged that the U.S. government has suspended all imports of Mexican avocados after a U.S. plant safety inspector in Mexico received a threat.
The surprise suspension was confirmed late Saturday on the eve of the Super Bowl, the biggest sales opportunity of the year for Mexican avocado growers.
Avocado exports are the latest victim of the drug cartel turf battles and extortion of avocado growers in the western state of Michoacan, the only state in Mexico fully authorized to export to the U.S. market.
The U.S. government suspended all imports of Mexican avocados until further notice after a U.S. plant safety inspector in Mexico received a threatening message, Mexicos Agriculture Department said in a statement.

(86,061 posts)Has already arrived and been sold at retail or is still in the bin at the store today. Won't really be such a concern in a day or two.

(20,882 posts)This just gives Fox another talking point to attack President Biden.
I can just hear the talking heads saying Biden taking away our guacamole and avocado toast!
While not talking about the duties TFG put upon countries that is one of reason why we have a global trade shortage and inflation.

(8,936 posts)We stocked up. They keep well in the fridge.
How else will I eat toast?!
I believe the avocados from Costco are Peruvian. But we got a real bad batch from there once. We actually returned them, and I hate returning anything. They were just brown on the inside.
Now we just wait for Safeway sales. 88 cents a pop til Tuesday here.

(58,785 posts)in the person of one of our crop inspectors, so we suspended all imports. Good for President Biden! This is not the first time they've threatened our inspectors.
Not-so-funny, I was just mentioning the crime cartels' taking over the lime and avocado ("green gold" industries on another thread. Drugs have to be snuck in dangerously and that industry is prone to big losses. Avocados ship in normally and legally, and they don't have to keep replacing employees who get jailed and killed.
We have two on the counter ready for tonight, when there will be only two of us. After that we'll wait. Avocados are pretty much staples around here too, but I'd be glad to wait until the farmers got control of their orchards back if only...

Wish avocados didnt get caught up in it tho.

(32,061 posts)They've been on the store shelves for over a week now, so this won't be affecting "the biggest sales opportunity of the year." Those fruits were already sold, and a fat chunk of them have been purchased by now. The stores around here are loaded with 'em. If you see markdowns later this week, snatch them up, mash them, and freeze them. They stay good for a couple of months, if you keep them airtight.
