WASHINGTONDemocrats hoping to resurrect the partys economic agenda are facing a problem: Sen. Joe Manchins goal for raising tax rates clashes with Sen. Kyrsten Sinemas opposition to doing so.
In a 50-50 Senate with Republicans unanimously opposed to the effort, the party will have to try to reconcile the pairs divergent positions to earn both their votes for a scaled-down version of President Bidens economic agenda ahead of this years midterm elections.
In recent weeks, as Democrats efforts on the child-care, healthcare and climate package have remained stalled, Mr. Manchin (D., W.Va.) has repeatedly said the party should focus an updated version of the bill on increasing government revenue. Raising taxes enough to more than offset the bills spending would reduce the budget deficit and fight inflation, he said, addressing concerns that led him to oppose the House-passed package last year.
Why cant we just get a good solid tax plan that works? Mr. Manchin said to The Wall Street Journal last week. Thats the first thing to do.

Manchin wants Sinema to take a fresh look at tax rate hikes on corporations and the rich, but she's not budging
Sen. Joe Manchin is starting to turn up the heat on another Democratic holdout with competing demands on President Joe Biden's spending bill.
The conservative West Virginia Democrat has ramped up calls this month to step up taxes on the richest Americans and large firms. But he's likely to encounter resistance from Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who shut the door on hiking tax rates on both of those groups last fall.
"I respect her and what her concerns may be, but I think basically our financial situation is getting worse, not better, so maybe we can take another look at it," Manchin told The Wall Street Journal. "I would hope so."
"Why can't we just get a good solid tax plan that works? That's the first thing to do." he told the Journal.

(24,353 posts)why can't they (he and Manchin) just get together and work it out together and come back when they have a plan? It's not like they're not co-workers or something? Seems like all of the debate and horse-trading really just comes down to them.

Give her 2024 primary opponent more ammunition.
