This: Combination of three heart drugs in teen Russian skater Valieva's system "seem to be aimed at increasing endurance, reducing fatigue and promoting greater efficiency in using oxygen," says United States Anti-Doping Agency Chief Executive Officer Travis Tygart.
She was given a cheating cocktail.
This entire competition has turned into a sick joke.

Her coach (Eteri Tutberidze) has a history of swapping in a new crop of 13-15-year-olds every couple of years, with nary a skater lasting much past her 18th birthday before succumbing to injuries and/or eating disorders.

(44,962 posts)Tara Lipinski herself had bones and joint problems at a young age. The kind of jumps and moves these skaters do are very hard on the body.

(1,999 posts)She kind of represented what was possible with over-training. IIRC, she was known for going into a "frenzy" at practices, practicing one triple loop-triple loop combo after another. She had hip surgery for a torn labrum at age 18 (and her surgeon was said to be horrified upon seeing tape of her performing her signature triple-loop-triple-loop combination and said "never do that again." ) She retired from pro skating at age 20.
If you work from the premise that repetition and muscle memory are the key to learning the difficult jumps, then out-of-competition doping to increase the ability to recover from excessive practicing could theoretically be beneficial. But the benefit would come from enabling further pounding on the musculoskeletal system due to practice jump landings. Hence the sketchy injury history of Eteri's proteges.
And while I'm at it: saying that a drug has "not been shown to be performance enhancing" just means no one has published anything on it. If a group has done their own experimenting and has kept it secret rather than publish their evidence, we'd see just what we're seeing. (A bunch of perfectly healthy elite athletes taking heart drugs such as meldonium or TMZ)

(44,962 posts)These jumps are very hard on the body. A lot of them have back problems, joint problems, etc. Many have career ending injuries.
These substances are the least of their worries.

(44,962 posts)The other two substances are not heart drugs. One is a supplement, and the other is an anti-oxidant. And they are not on a list of prohibited substances. Many athletes take them. They are allowed to have them in their systems.
So it's a lie to claim she had three cheat drugs and so on.

(1,962 posts)After all, girls and women's sports are all under attack! This is a Serious Problem and it needs Serious Action! Sports should be a safe space for females, and it's total injustice that these girls lost to a doped-up 15 year old Russian girl! They all should've had a fair chance to win, and it was denied because of the cocktail of drugs she's on!
And I know they're around. They have to be. I saw them just the other day, speaking up and fighting valiantly to protect female athletes!
Who is going to do something?! When is it going to be done?! This cannot be allowed to happen to female athletes! This is Serious! This is the worst injustice in the world today and....
Wait. What's that about Kamila Valieva? She's.... Ohh... OHHHH. Nevermind. All good. This isn't a travesty after all. Move along. Nothing to see here. All female athletes are free and safe from Serious Issues.
