He had an aggressive soft tissue tumor on his right "shoulder".
In a couple months it got looking like a tennis ball was stuffed under his skin.
Blocking flow of lymph, the paw was swelling.
Took him to vet at 330, with agreement that it was time for palliative care.
Then, around 930 tonight, shallow, rapid breathing, and whining.
I take him out to do potty business and when he got done just collapsed into the snow.
Put him in car, and instead of getting on seat he just dropped onto the floor.
The 24 hour vet is 35 minutes away, so my wife calls as I'm leaving.
He barely moved the whole drive. I was checking regularly to see if he was breathing.
Second vet sees him today & says his system is in collapse. She guessed the tumor broke & started spreading toxins.
I couldn't stand for him to suffer, so we pulled the plug, so to speak.
Pretty sad.

What was your doggie's name?
We had to end our 12yo Lab's suffering on NYD, this yr. He'd had a long, good life but was collapsing on his feet and couldn't hold any food down. He was diagnosed with systemic cancer last July; so, it was time.

(9,895 posts)The more deeply we love - any one in our lives whether family, friend, pet or acquaintance; the more acute the pain and deep the feeling of loss when they are gone. May memories of pleasant times and happier days overcome your sadness and leave you with the warm remembrance of a rich life for your pet and happy companion before nature turned on your time together.

(10,811 posts)Because I know how hard it is. Every time, never gets easier.
One of my Bernese Mountain dogs went like this with an encapsulated tumor on her side. I'd had her to the vets on a Thursday for labored breathing. X-rays came back fine. By Sunday, she could barely stand. X-rays of her lungs looked as if they were filled with spider webs. That fast!
Sad, yes. But at least we can relieve the suffering.
Take care.

(2,769 posts)My sweet little boy Rudy had Cushing's disease for about 3 years and I thought he was doing OK.
But I took him to the vet a week ago for a usual test and after a ultrasound, she said he had a large tumor on his spleen and was bleeding into his abdomen.
Although it was shocking diagnosis to me, there was no question as to what to do. It was the kindest thing to do. He was 10.
I also have a younger dog who is now looks for her best buddy and doesn't find him.

(32,328 posts)I went through the same thing with my dog (terrier/husky mix) about 15 years ago. She was 14 and otherwise healthy, but she had the same kind of tumor you've described. My dog was trying to "doctor" herself (it's instinctive) and she would bite the tumor and try to lick it clean as much as she could. But of course it kept growing bigger, and I finally discovered it when it was too late to save her. I took her to the vet and she could barely walk. I didn't want her to suffer, so the vet put Nakita to sleep.

(42,206 posts)We had to put our 12 YO hound/husky fellow down last year. He went downhill fast. All his blood work checked out but he was failing.
It was so hard but we knew - and I think he knew - it was time. I still miss him.
Sad to happy for us - the next day, our first grandchild came into the world.
I am sorry for your loss.

(1,257 posts)although the last one was easier for some reason. I kept telling myself that we were so blessed to have had such a great companion for so many years, but it was time to let go. In this case it was a cat... several months later we found another one and she is now just as special, but in different ways. I find you can't really 'replace' a pet, they are all unique, so it's those fond memories I hang on to.
My condolences.
