Really.
Appreciate your OP.
They also were against the US involvement in Ukraine when RU first invaded the country, re: weapons & sanctions.
And NATO. As well
Leave Russia alone,

(68,352 posts)get elected. AOC comes from a deep blue district thus I see no reason for such a vote. I can't believe she supports Putin's Oligarchs and the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. However, she is not in my district or state so it is up to her constituents whether her actions are acceptable to them or perhaps a primary may be in order.

(68,352 posts)by more than 40 points. AOC does not have this problem as her district is a Democratic stronghold.

(2,191 posts)Part of the issue is that the right leaning publications and reporters will either make things up or twist them when members of the Squad are concerned. At the same time pundits who say they are liberal but always seem to advise us to be more like Republicans, have a special treatment of the Squad.
At the other end, some liberal voices are accusing the Squad of being militant in responding to Putin the way they are.
For example:
Left Voice is accusing them of being war mongers and fake liberals. https://www.leftvoice.org/the-squad-calls-for-u-s-intervention-in-ukraine/
The New York Post thinks they are in league with Putin. https://nypost.com/2022/03/19/squad-takes-kid-gloves-to-putin/
I do know that AOC is concerned with not damaging the people of Russia any more than necessary. I agree, but I don't think we have a choice when the Russian government is exploiting their own people to power their genocidal attacks on Ukraine.
The media controlled cult in Russia is the real thing and not just the imitation that Fox News, Qanon and Maga have made the Republican party into. In our case it is a large dangerous minority that pretends it is an endangered majority. In their case it is a large dangerous majority that makes speaking the truth dangerous even if the authorities don't come after you.
My own thinking is that right now Russia is like Jones Town or the Branch Davidian compound. We dare not let them continue doing the things they do, but we don't want them to drink the cool-aide. Or in this case use the bomb.
So how do we stop this war, avoid injury the the Russian people, protect the Ukrainian people, stand up to global terrorism and keep from having the button pushed? I expect we will see a lot of conflicts of opinion here. My hope is that between our voices we can come up with a way to resolve these issues.
If not, we can only hope that the next species to rise up from the ruins is wiser than ours. If it comes to that, I wish them luck.

(110,950 posts)They may think that it would only escalate the war and would serve no other useful purpose? But why shouldn't they help pay for rebuilding what their pal, Putin, has destroyed?

ACLU officials told lawmakers Tuesday that the legislation could run afoul of due-process protections in the U.S. Constitution because it does not allow its targets to challenge the governments actions in court, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private talks. ACLU officials warned that the measure would probably be struck down by the judicial branch if enacted as proposed, giving Russia a potential propaganda victory over the United States, the people said.
This was also mentioned in the Wapo article
On Tuesday night, lawmakers voted to dramatically weaken the measure by turning it into a Sense of Congress resolution that does not create the new authority. The amended measure also creates a task force giving the Biden administration 60 days to determine the constitutional mechanisms through which President Biden could confiscate the assets, after which lawmakers could create a new legislative proposal.
Still... should have abstained

(2,372 posts)...it could be easily challenged in court and give Russia a win. This was a non-binding resolution but was based on an earlier bill with the same problem of no due process. "The Squad" is able to see around corners like this because they've seen plenty of problems with no due process. BTW it was all four of the so-called "Squad" that voted against the bill as well as 2 other conservatives.
