(8,943 posts)My daughter is a teacher, an amazing teacher, when she got her first classroom, I went with her to review it and go over in detail how to be as safe as possible in her classroom. We went over how to exit the room and the building, multiple routs and exits, where to hide, where to barricade, and then how to try to fight if necessary. My daughter is an amazing young woman with the heart of a warrior. She was a very competitive athlete when in school and I know that she would kill or die protecting her students. She changed schools twice and we went over the same drill each time.
Some may think this overkill but attacks like this keep me up at night. Before she went off to college I had her read The Gift of Fear by Gavin Debecker, and we talked about it. She knows that this is what I do and how serious it is to me. She would talk about situational awareness in the 4th grade. She has an incredible head on her shoulders. She tries to do everything right to keep her class safe.
There is sick a problem here. These teachers and the students did not have a chance. My daughter would not have a chance. She has the heart of a lion but would not have a chance. That is the sad reality. Her bringing a gun into the classroom is not the solution. How would she secure a weapon in a classroom full of kids. If she had a weapon and was properly trained, thousands of hours to make good decisions with screaming terrified kids under amazing pressure, she probably could try to kill to protect her children, but really, she would not have a chance, a Kevlar wearing AR carrying person with no care for human life...... I look at these babies who were slaughtered, the teachers who were murdered protecting their children and I am at a loss, I am hollow, I just have no words.

(12 posts)has me in tears. Your daughter sounds like an amazing person and teacher!
I also have a daughter who is a teacher, and when not crying about the massive loss of children and teachers Texas, I worry endlessly about her and her students.
This is just horrible. So senseless, and so preventable. my heart literally hurts.
