Not perfect as we'd like, but a good start until we can get a majority.
@RepSwalwell
We are going to vote this week in @HouseJudiciary to raise the age to buy an assault weapon to 21.
*Ive written legislation to ban and buyback weapons of mass destruction. But with slim majorities in Congress increasing the purchase age is a step that can make use safer.

(12,286 posts)Right to Vote at Age 18
Passed by Congress March 23, 1971. Ratified July 1, 1971. The 26th Amendment changed a portion of the 14th Amendment
Section 1
The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.
Section 2
The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Its a start. Frankly Id just say no more ar15s can be made or sold effective 1/1/2023. You can keep what you have but if you try and sell it other than thru an Ffl dealer you lose the weapon and get 6months in jail. Will it stop all the crazies...probably not but its worth trying.
And put in the law that if the aliens invade from space or the bad commies invade everybody will get an M16....not that they will stop space aliens😬

And gun control!

Now, that's a well regulated militia!

Maybe youre just trying to be funny (yes, we all know the military rhyme) or maybe I dont quite understand you.

(26,620 posts)It's serious with a twist. Sure that can be confusing. Sorry if it was.
My intention was any weapons. No place for WMD's in society.
I belonged to a pretty serious fly-fishing club that had good retention of members.
Another much larger club that had lots of one and done members, and they said "At least, they learned a little about conservation before dropping out"
Of course, not all veterans are going to hold that oath to the Constitution and feeling of fellowship with a diverse team, where it's definitely not "everyone for themself" ... but rather, each life depends on the other.
Again, better to be exposed to some responsibility than none at all, as our echo chamber media, libertarian prophets and outright nutjobs proclaim.

(8,103 posts)There is a lot of science to support that as the age at which the brain has fully developed. If a youngster wants to handle such a weapon, let him/her join a service where it is legal. If they don't believe in the service, which many don't, then they have to wait.
This should be a separate issue from "of age" rights, such as voting and such, because of the horrific outcomes possible.
Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't cops even restricted from having such automatic weapons at their disposal?
The NRA took a Russian rep around to observe our voting mechanisms at poll places; the NRA is adverse to the public welfare, and I am sick of them and their whiny-assed "but, but, but my GUN!" Well, "but, but, but MY CHILD." Children always come first, they have to, and we should be able to do something about these killings despite the 2A.
The 2A is now obstructing our ability to educate our children. We are going to have a serious brain drain because parents are afraid to send their kids to a public school. Why should the 2A be allowed to unravel our school systems? Yet, I don't blame any parent for refusing to send their kid to school. It looks bad, like something is wrong in the home, but all they would have to say is, "I was afraid to expose my child to potential harm." And, I would agree with them.
