PoliticoSome federal elected officials forget that a city is not managed through Twitter or social media, Adams said at an unrelated press conference, not mentioning Ocasio-Cortez by name. Ive stepped back and decided not to engage in the back-and-forth mudslinging and frankly slander by some, who acted without factual information, showed no care to, and never bothered to even seek the truth. Today, I want to set the record straight, because facts still do matter, at least to me, even if they may not to others.
The speaker, a fellow Democrat, was responding unprompted to a series of tweets Ocasio-Cortez has made in recent days lambasting funding choices in the citys $101.1 billion budget.
The budget attracted AOCs attention after a group of breakaway progressives who voted against the fiscal plan claimed the speaker penalized them by withholding discretionary funds they allocate to local causes. On Thursday, Adams said she did allocate money to the members pet projects, but just did not credit them by name in the budget.

(13,469 posts)I think she's a great communicator. But she ruins relationships with local, state wide, and national leaders, which makes her unable to build coalitions to get things done. Some of this could be tackled by thinking before she tweets. Stop and consider whether what she is going to say will be helpful in the long run.

(93,880 posts)Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a frequent critic of moderate Democrats in her own party, has accused the speaker of the New York City Council of playing dirty politics against several progressive Democrats.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez criticized the speaker, Adrienne Adams, over a final city budget deal that she said included unconscionable cuts to education, and accused her of punishing Council members most of them sharing Ms. Ocasio-Cortezs leftist views who voted against her.
In an Instagram video on Tuesday night that was captioned What dirty politics looks like, the congresswoman said that the speaker deprived community groups that were supported by dissenting members, including an after-school program at a Boys & Girls Club in Queens.

(9,631 posts)Which is close to unprovoked
onenote
(42,383 posts)AOC's attack was the provocation. The response was "unprompted" because Adams was not responding to a question about the attacks. See the difference?

(42,383 posts)and characterizing their actions as engaging in "movie villain type of decision-making" -- which is just some of the things AOC accused Adams of -- seems like an attack to me, not just "discussing" budgets.

So by my math nyc has $101,000,000,000 budget for 8,000,000 people =$12,625
Illinois has 87,000,000,000 for 12,000,000 people =
$7250.
I am just surprised since we have received so much budget grief

(9,631 posts)Its no wonder regular people cant afford to live there
brooklynite
(93,880 posts)Living in NYC is expensive because people actually WANT to move here. And the people who pay top dollar for housing also pay high taxes to support city operations.
questionseverything
(9,631 posts)Thats more zeros than I can handle easily
I wonder if they really want to be there or if they just dont have the means to pickup and start over
(Regular people I mean, not wealthy folks)

(64,427 posts)It's not that many zeroes. Slightly into 5 figures.
In 2021, the federal government spent or transferred $6.82 trillion. This is for something over 330 million people, or over $20,000 per capita.
I don't think you thought this through.
questionseverything
(9,631 posts)Nycs city budget is more per capita than Illinois state budget is per capita
I am assuming the state of ny has a separate budget and of course both places have federal monies too
I was just surprised at how high it was
. And if you take into account how many people pay nothing (because they cant) then the average goes up again
brooklynite
(93,880 posts)There are a lot of wealthy people living in New York City who DO pay very high taxes (property AND income).

(10,073 posts)from New Jersey, Long Island, and the counties to the north (I used to be one of them). They use some of the services - roads, transportation, water, garbage, sewers - I bet that if you add them in you get a couple of million more people (I used to be one of them way back when).
Where do you live, btw?

IE - get something done for infrastructure and green energy.
I would be pissed to high holy hell if Tom Malinowski was going after the council president in my town.
