Sotomayor accuses conservatives of 'dismantling' church-state separation

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the Supreme Court’s most outspoken liberal, accused the court’s six-member conservative majority of eroding the barrier between church and state on Tuesday by striking down a Maine policy that barred religious schools from receiving taxpayer-funded tuition aid.

“This Court continues to dismantle the wall of separation between church and state that the Framers fought to build,” Sotomayor wrote, dissenting from the 6-3 decision that broke along ideological lines.

“In just a few years, the Court has upended constitutional doctrine,” she added, “shifting from a rule that permits States to decline to fund religious organizations to one that requires States in many circumstances to subsidize religious indoctrination with taxpayer dollars.”

Sotomayor also joined in part a separate dissent written by fellow liberal Justice Stephen Breyer, whose opinion was joined in full by Justice Elena Kagan, the court’s third liberal member.

There are no SCOTUS openings now, and the only way to remove members is through impeachment. Needing 17 Repug senators to vote to convict, it ain't gonna happen.

The ONLY way to turn this around is to GOTV!

they get to pay religious schools with public money because "free exercise"...AND their churches can't answer to the public or be taxed because "free exercise"!

That's what they are setting up.

Time to tax all churches and church property...since, you know, there is no barrier between the two.

where Christian doctrine becomes the law of the land. The right-wing Catholics on the Supreme Court may very well enable this to happen. Perhaps they will need protection!

I can't help but think that if women's rights don't matter, if black lives don't matter, if the ability to send your children to school without being slaughtered doesn't matter, if the large majority of opinions on gun laws don't matter, if preserving the separation of church and state doesn't matter, and the purchasing of our representatives by corporations doesn't matter, then it's time the supreme-court doesn't matter. Turn off the lights, stop all funding. let us all carry on trying to do the right thing. let those who perjured their way into this so called court take their robes off and come arrest us all.A big thanks to all d.uers from an avowed lurker. love you all.

In the same breath they will tell a "Christian," homophobic, cake baker they don't have to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Just wait . . . Roe's up next. The holier-than-thou have told them to toss it and I'm sure the Catholic crowd on the Supreme Court is poised to accommodate. It seems they prefer to end the lives of children via school shootings or removal of food stamps and Medicaid.
