DC Circuit Nominee Selected to Replace Ketanji Brown Jackson Sails Through Confirmation Hearing
President Joe Bidens pick to replace Ketanji Brown Jackson on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit faced no opposition Wednesday during her nomination hearing, in contrast to others that have been marred by partisanship.
Florence Pan, currently a U.S. District Judge in the District of Columbia, faced no pushback from Republican lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday. She was confirmed to the federal district court in D.C. last September in a bipartisan vote of 68-30.
The hearing for Pan was a marked difference from other hearings for Bidens judicial picks that often feature political theater and partisan questioning, with Republicans quick to attack nominees over previous work as advocates or writings from law school.
On Wednesday, Pan described her familys fleeing from mainland China to Taiwan in 1948, and her grandfathers work as an administrative law judge in China being the inspiration for her to enter public service.
I very much respect what attorneys in private practice do
but I think the reason I went to law school was because I wanted some larger purpose. And to pursue a career in public service, Pan said in response to a question from Sen. Mazie Hirono.
Pan was an associate judge on the local Superior Court of the District of Columbia before joining the federal bench.
