I live in WA, and it (as with the other two states) is mainly “blue” because of a couple of big cities. Most of the rest of the area ranges from deep-red rural to purple suburbs. In those areas, abortion hasn’t been a campaign issue, since it was “settled law”…until today. Now, look for it to become an issue in every campaign outside Seattle and Tacoma (and, in those other states, in Portland, Eugene, SF, and LA). Watch for Democratic candidates elsewhere to be labeled as “baby killers,” and for a new mobilization among conservative churches to turn out their members to “protect innocent life.” In an otherwise low-turnout midterm election like this coming November, that may well be enough to flip a state senate or legislature – and, then, all anti-choice forces will need is to win one gubernatorial election, and abortion is just as illegal as in Texas.

And, if you think that can’t happen here, remember that it wasn’t that long ago that voters in “liberal” California passed Proposition 8.
