It's like we are fighting the Confederacy again. They are going to lose again. Unfortunately many people are going to hurt.

I hear Jonestown is nice this time of year - and the Kool-aid is plentiful!

(12,590 posts)president would not. The US government has way more weapons than any defectors would have and they would not be allowed to break up the union.
So, whoever is president - and has the most weapons - will make the decision. Which is even more reason that we must have a democratic president for the foreseeable future.
It is going to take at least a generation for Trump supporters to die off.

(5,491 posts)The US has constantly changed. That's one advantage we've had over old countries rooted in long tradition. We don't really have traditions in this country. We are constantly transitioning to the next thing. I think the four years of Trump marked the end of a transition that started with St. Ronnie. I think we transitioned back to two distinctly different countries again. It's a lot more than just slavery that divides us this time though.
But the couple of things we all have in common is that climate change will impact us all and over the last 40 years, only the very wealthy have benefited from the economy. The rest of us have worked harder for proportionately less than our grandparents earned.
I question is will these two big things factor into the next transition? Will millennials and gen-z drift buy into the current stream of cristofacism that is currently prevalent or will they reject it. Might they adopt something just as extreme but maybe in a different direction?
It's hard to predict. I worry that cristofacism might offer a mob mentality comfort that might be appealing to many people. Blaming others for one's short comings is easy and I'm assuming very cathartic.
In any case, I hope the period we are in is short lived. May another transition start soon.
